Fodor's Expert Review Cape Milner Hotel
2A Milner Rd., Cape Town, Western Cape, 8001, South Africa, Cape Town, South Africa See on Map
The only midsize hotel in the lovely Tamboerskloof area, the clean and comfortable Milner makes a convenient location from which to explore trendy nearby Kloof Street and beyond. Public areas are high-energy, with hip music and TVs broadcasting news or fashion channels, and the bar, with views of Table Mountain, is cool. A free shuttle service (within 8 km [5 miles] of the hotel, which will allow you to reach both the V&A Waterfront and nearby Camps Bay beach) is a good perk.
room
Simply decorated modern rooms with subtle African-chic touches have all the amenities you'd expect. Timber floors, bright cushions and throws and a generally taupe palette give them a relaxing feel, with great mountain views available. Some have balconies.
bathroom
Bathrooms are spacious, polished and well-appointed.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Bathrooms can flood a little due to the design and layout of the shower.
lobby
The hotel lobby is modern and chic, with bright teal and mustard furnishings lifting the taupe and grey base colors. Staff are very helpful.
gym
There's also a small gym (plus parking and conferencing facilties, should they be in demand).
dining
For a medium-sized hotel, there's a reasonable dining offer, from the tasty meals served at 2 on Milner (a buffet breakfast for guests, with hot egg options cooked to order, right through to a la carte dinners) to outdoor dining available below the pergola or by the pool.
drinking
The hotel's vibey bar, The Glass Lounge, also serves tapas as well as drinks from coffees to cocktails. With its conservatory-like roof and views of the mountains beyond, it's a gorgeous, relaxed spot, designed to bring to mind the 1920s Prohibition-era.
Try the truffle and cheese croquettes to soak up all those zingy cocktails.
LOCATION
Getting Around
The hotel has a great location, walking distance from happening bars and restaurants, but between the city center and beaches of the peninsula, meaning most can be reached within a 10-minute drive.
Restaurants
With a fairy lit garden and rich, decadent interior design, Kloof Street House (6-minute walk) is a favourite for good, eclectic food. Or try the friendly Miller's Thumb (4-minute walk) to mix with locals and enjoy the fresh fish specials.
WHY WE LIKE IT
A friendly, stylish boutique hotel with pleasant views and a good location, Cape Milner perhaps isn't the superlative experience some of Cape Town's smaller, luxury properties offer - but then it doesn't have the superlative prices to match, either. A good deal and a fun stay.
