Fodor's Expert Review Museum of Omani Dress

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

One of the first things many visitors to Oman notice is the unique clothing the locals wear. Men tend to wear crisp, white, ankle-length garments called dishdasha and colorful turbans called mussars or embroidered caps called kuma. Women in Muscat typically follow the Gulf abaya fashions, though the traditional female dress in Oman is vibrantly colorful and highly embellished. Explore this aspect of local culture at this small collection of traditional Omani men's and women's attire just north of the airport. Informative guided tours and exhibits offer insights into the history of Omani clothing and its connection to the local culture. An extension of the Centre for Omani dress, a historic research endeavour, this museum has limited operating hours and is open seasonally, so it is good to call ahead to ensure they haven't changed their timing or closed for a special exhibition.
