Fodor's Expert Review The Brauhaus

$ Swakopmund German

A Swakopmund institution, the original Brauhaus burned to the ground in 2009 in an electrical fire, but the current edifice is an exact replica of its predecessor, minus many of the beloved beer steins and other decorative memorabilia. The beer is flowing once again, and the big wooden tables invite long sit-downs over hearty lunches and dinners featuring dishes like schnitzel, bratwurst, and rosti (similar to a potato pancake). The German fare is excellent but if goulash and sauerkraut don't do it for you, there is a large selection of steaks and game meat, as well as seafood and even a few pasta and vegetarian options. A lively gathering place on Saturday afternoons, this is the place to mingle with the (mostly Germanic) locals.
