Fodor's Expert Review Kulala Tented Camp

Namibia

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Although this small, stylish camp calls itself a "tented" camp, only the walls of your unit are actually made of canvas: your roof is thatch and your floor and deck are wood. As the camp faces west, don't miss the opportunity to sit out on your personal rooftop deck to watch a spectacular Namibian sunset (you can also request a bedroll to sleep under the stars up there). You won't find much big game here, but spotting springbok and ostrich skittering over the stark landscape, catching a glimpse of the dramatic desert oryx, and listening to the barking geckos as the sun goes down are all memorable experiences. Take a guided trip to Sossusvlei, go walking with a knowledgeable guide in the surrounding desert, or treat yourself (go on; it's expensive but the experience of a lifetime) to a dawn hot-air balloon ride.

PROS

  • main lodge area has a beautiful sundeck and pool with views of the valley and mountains
  • camel rides, quad bikes, and helicopter flights also available at extra cost

CONS

  • no a/c can make for a hot stay in summer
