Fodor's Expert Review Place Hassan II

Tetouan Plaza/Square

If you follow the pedestrian Boulevard Mohammed V past Spanish houses with wrought-iron balconies and tilework, you will eventually flow into Place Hassan II, the open square near the Royal Palace, unusually located in the very center city and a central gathering place in the evening. On the east side look up to see Dar Tair (the "House of the Bird"), an old Spanish apartment building crowned with a majestic bronze statue of a man sitting atop an eagle. The square is also the entrance point to Bab er-Rouah, the historical covered market on the north side, the Mellah and M'sala on the east and south, and Rue Zawiya, where you'll find a few nice dining options.
