Fodor's Expert Review Petit Socco

Medina Plaza/Square

Tennessee Williams based his play Camino Real on this square—and it is indeed dramatic, with a cast of characters passing through at any time of the day who are bound to give you a taste of Moroccan daily life. It has a theatrical range of seating, which is split among the three main cafés—parterre (Tingis), orchestra (Centrale), or balcony (Fuentes). The Fuentes used to be the German post office in the International Zone period—supposedly the most reliable one before the Germans fled during WWII. It's a great place to take a break before plunging back into the souks that surround it, or let gravity take you down past the Grand Mosque to the viewing platform looking out onto the port.
