Fodor's Expert Review Grand Mosque

Medina Religious Building/Site/Shrine

The towering white-and-green-tiled minaret of the largest mosque in the city make it one of the most recognizable attractions in Tangier's medina. Built in 1685 (on the ruins of a destroyed European-built church) under the orders of the Sultan Moulay Ismail, it was a tribute to and celebration of Morocco's return to Arab control. While only Muslims are allowed to enter the mosque, its vibrant exterior make it a great spot for photos as you wander through the medina.
