Fodor's Expert Review Attarine Medersa
Fez el-Bali
Educational Institution
Named for local spice merchants known as attar, the Attarine Medersa (Koranic school of the Spice Sellers) was founded by Merinid Sultan Abou Saïd Othman in the 14th century as a students' dormitory attached to the Kairaouine Mosque next door. Its graceful proportions, elegant, geometric carved-cedar ornamentation, and excellent state of preservation make it one of the best representations of Moorish architecture in Fez.
