Fodor's Expert Review The Rothschild Hotel
96 Rothschild Blvd., Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv, 65224, Israel, Tel Aviv, Israel See on Map Fodor's Choice
On Rothschild Street, this boutique hotel has a color scheme and design aesthetic intended to evoke the Tel Aviv of days gone by. Every detail, down to the fabrics on the furnishings, was carefully chosen to reflect the character of Baron de Rothschild, after whom the hotel was named. Each room has a bidet—not typical of Tel Aviv hotels—as well as huge flat-screen TVs, espresso machines, and eco-friendly bath products. Guests enter through the restaurant and bar, highlighting the culinary focus; the Israeli wine menu is divided by local region and breakfast is one of Tel Aviv's tastiest.
room
Handsome, refined and masculine in their design, rooms feature rich leather headboards, intricate cool stone tiling and leather chairs. Original artwork in each room pays homage to the Baron de Rothschild, the hotel's namesake, and light fixtures evoke wine bottles to bring his influence on Israel's wine industry to mind.
Business travelers visiting the hotel alone can book a Superior Single Room, which has all the perks of a regular room save for a more narrow twin bed, and save a bundle in the process.
bathroom
Dark wood paneling continues in the bathroom, which features a basin sink and a generous shower. Eco-friendly toiletries made by hand at a farm in Israel's south are presented in test-tube style bottles.
lobby
To enter the hotel's lobby you must first make your way through The Rothschild's restaurant and bar. Cool dome lights and a creative lighting system that shows which rooms are occupied at all times add modern flair.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The hotel's location on one of Tel Aviv's busiest urban thoroughfares, as well as its popular in-house restaurant, means the hotel is a fluid part of the city and many visitors pass in and out. If you prefer more exclusivity, this may not be the property for you.
dining
The Bistro serves three meals a day and is a popular spot for both hotel guests and locals. Its entire menu is available via room service as well.
At breakfast, try the purple shakshuka -- a twist on the popular Israeli breakfast dish of simmering tomatoes and eggs, made here with beets instead of tomatoes.
drinking
The Bistro Bar offers a wide range of cocktails, wines and beers.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Rothschild Boulevard is serviced by a number of major bus lines, notably the popular 5 bus and the bright yellow 5 shared taxi, aka "Sherut". There are also taxis available to hail at all hours of the day.
Restaurants
For excellent seafood and Mediterranean flavors, head to Milgo and Milbar (6-minute walk); for lovely small plates with Italian influence and casual a la carte flair, walk over to Cichetti (4-minute walk).
WHY WE LIKE IT
The best boutique hotels offer unique design, warm service and all the amenities you need to make you feel at home. The Rothschild Hotel doesn't have a spa or gym, but it does have a great restaurant, beautiful guest rooms and an excellent perch for exploring the best that urban Tel Aviv has to offer.
