El Nakhil Hotel and Restaurant

Gezira el-Bairat, Luxor, Luxor, Egypt

The warmth of Egyptian hospitality and exacting German housekeeping standards make this family-run West Bank hotel a standout option on the bucolic side of the Nile. This is village Egypt, where turbaned men walk dirt lanes to their jobs working the fields, where birds twitter, donkeys bellow, and you can hear the breeze rustling the palm branches. Most guests are Americans and Brits who first encountered El Nakhil on group tours that stop for lunch at its expansive rooftop restaurant; they were impressed enough to stay here on a return trip. Beer, wine, and alcohol are served here. Rooms have tile floors and fully tiled bathrooms; firm platform beds; a wardrobe; high ceilings, domed in some rooms; and balconies or terraces that face an inner garden of flowering trees. Fixtures, furnishings, and finishes are like new. And although there are no phones or TVs to break the peace, the air conditioners and ceiling fans are efficient.
