What to Wear: Honeymoon Edition

The aisle has been walked, the guests greeted, and the vows said. Now onto the fun stuff—the honeymoon! Whether a tropical isle is on the itinerary or it’s more of a country or city escape, the honeymoon trip is your time to hang out with your favorite guy or gal in the world. Here are our honeymooner style picks, no matter your destination.

Tropical Island Fever

Decompress from wedding stress with island breezes, a tropical drink, and swaying palm trees. For those that might be Bali bound, hop a flight on luxurious Singapore Air to Denpasar. When you land, check out insider hot-spot Hu’u at Jalan Oberoi Petitenget Beach for a great grown-up crowd and live music. White sandals with a bit of the sparkle will do the trick here. This low-heeled style with jewel accents by Nine West ($89) will show off an island tan just fine. Pair them with an exuberant tropical print dress ($47.99 on sale, by Mango) that you can slip on over a hot pink palm fronds-print bikini set ($55 for the top and $45 for the bottom, both by Patagonia) after a day hitting the surf at the Kuta beaches. Be sure to have to a floppy straw hat ($14.99 at Target) at the ready for the equatorial heat.

And along your wanderings, maybe you’ll pick up an ikat or batik print bag along the many vendors on Main Street. If you’re looking for fancier items, the Magali Pascal store is a must-stop with three locations in the Seminayk-Kuta area. On accessories, the island is mostly casual, but it doesn’t hurt to bring along a little pizzazz – this being a honeymoon after all. A striking teal clutch gets an exotic upgrade at Ann Taylor ($118) and the soft foldover leather shape makes it an easy packing item. Nearly shoulder-grazing gold chandelier earrings will liven up just about any tropical weather outfit. At Nordstrom, they’re a steal at just $10 for this filigree pair. Lastly, don’t forget your sunnies. Nude and peachy colors add a slightly retro, feminine touch. We like this exaggerated cat-eye pair by Nicole Richie’s House of Harlow brand ($138) that will be perfect for viewing the sunset at Potato Head Beach Club in Seminayk.

Southern Romance

A charming portico, wind-swept fields, and country relaxation is the stuff of great romances (see: Gone with the Wind). Add a couple mint juleps and you’ve got yourself a honeymoon. When in a place like Charleston, South Carolina, let out your girly girl. Try a little lace, like a blush pink tank with lacy trim ($132 by Vanessa Bruno). It’ll go well with classic blue jeans—try a style with a high-waist and wider leg for a flattering fit—and a casual crossbody bag with a crafty feel ($48 by Free People) for taking in the annual 17-day Spoleto Festival of music and dance. Grab a classic fisherman’s sweater ($51 by J. Crew) in case temperatures drop.

At night, head to Jestine’s Kitchen (251 Meeting Street) for affordable Southern fare like fried oysters and pecan pie. Or for something more nouveau, check out The Macintosh that locally sources its ingredients and has a bacon happy hour—weekly drink specials Monday through Friday from 5-7 p.m. with a weekly special pork dish. Slip into a sweet prairie dress like this belted style by Joie with sheer overlay ($368). Pair with a denim jacket—American Eagle Outfitters has fairly priced styles like this medium rinse blue for ($49.95)—and a bold but delicate cuff like this antique gold design by Forever 21 for $12.80. Plan on some after-dinner strolling. Whimsical print wedges ($99.95 by Steve Madden) will do as well for date night as it would for a picturesque Lowcountry picnic on the grass at the idyllic North Charleston Riverfront Park.

City Escape

For never-ending entertainment and fun, a city destination is the way to go. Paris is a fail-proof option, with the gorgeous Seine snaking its way through the city and the picturesque streets lined with beautiful architecture and enticing boutiques. Urban style tends to be pared down with an eye towards sculptural qualities, textures, and the occasional burst of color. For day, try simple cuts in lovely materials like black leather shorts ($385 by Rag & Bone) paired with a printed silk top—this one by Parisian label Carven ($126) has an artsy feel that would be just right for strolling the hallowed halls of the Louvre. Perhaps in honor of the many Rodin sculptures at the Jardins des Tuileries, a sculptural Lulu Frost ring ($100) will add a lot to your wardrobe without taking up much room in the suitcase.

At night, book a table at hip yet cozy Chez Janou for excellent Provence-inspired fare. The ratatouille is a smart starter and then move to the magret or duck breast that is cooked to juicy perfection. Wear an evening to late night outfit, such as this chic red dress with flirty tulip skirt ($69 at Joe Fresh) and a sleek box clutch by BCBG Max Azria ($118.81). You can stow a pair of dramatic earrings, like these dazzling crystal posts by Swarovski ($100), in the clutch for when you hit up the late night spots like Le Regine, once frequented by Gene Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, just off the Champs Elysées. Keep your dancing feet stylish and comfortable (relatively speaking) in platform heels. This wood heel style by Zara ($159) is color-blocked with all the right neutral hues for optimal wardrobe pairing.
