Vatican Attempts Crowd Control, Hikes Admission Fee

As of January 2007, visitors to Rome who want to see the Vatican Museums can’t just show up in the morning and expect to get in. They must book a tour through a registered tourist agency. Those who wish to visit on their own will be allowed in only after the official tours are over at 10 a.m. Additionally, admission to the Vatican Museums has been raised from 12 euros to 13 euros (15 euros for those who book ahead). Tours range in price from 20 euros to 100 euros and can take anywhere from two to four hours. For a group tour in the 8 to 10 a.m. time slot, visitors must book with a Vatican-registered tour group at least a week in advance. One company that organizes tours is Select Italy. Megan Williams
