A Company Claims It Can Recommend Travel Based on Your Personality. Well, So Can We.

Recommendations for absolutely everyone!

A new company called The Spot for Me wants to help you find your perfect vacation spot based on your personality. It’s simple: You take a series of quizzes on the site and, based on your answers, they’ll recommend a place where you belong. It’s all based on the fact that “Destinations, like people, have a soul. Let us help you find your destination match, so you can say, ‘This is the spot for me‘.”

The website and its quiz are a creation by Carla and Cindy, a pair of longtime friends who frequently travel together. When Cindy was sitting at an all-inclusive resort, she overheard people planning their next trips and based on that eavesdropping, she soon realized that everyone liked doing the same sorts of things with the same people, year after year. So, she wanted to give people personalized options based on their comforts and discomforts.

It should be noted that the company’s mascot is a tiny toy van named Kevin, and Kevin the Van’s favorite place to visit is Prague.

The questions range from every day to pretty deep like, “Have you ever saved a life?” and “How many protein shakes have you drank [sic] in your life?” It’s a fun and whimsical little quiz, indeed.

My attitude is bad about this! The Spot For Me

Their Suggestions, and My Thoughts

I took this quiz four times, and each time I was asked different questions, and each time I got a new travel suggestion. Some of them were good! Some of them straight-up offended me.

Quiz #1

The Spot For Me Suggests: Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

My Thoughts: Based on my answers to questions like “Do you use your phone to call people?” it has been assumed that I would enjoy an adventurous hike to Machu Picchu. And you know what? They’re right. I would like to do that! I don’t know HOW you got this from me answering the question “How many protein shakes have you drank [sic] in your life?” (I answered “Fewer than 1,000”), but, hey, you’re right. I would love to visit Machu Picchu. Great job, quiz!

Quiz #2

The Spot For Me Suggests: Ames, IA

My Thoughts: Now this quiz is suggesting I go to Iowa? I answered “loyal” when asked how friends would describe me, and I got… Ames, Iowa? I mean… okay? But THEN, plot twist: I found out that Ames is home to the world’s largest concrete gnome and I was like, “Whoa, I love gnomes, I guess the quiz was right.” So, okay. Sure. Thanks for the suggestion, quiz. I guess I’m going to go to Iowa.

Quiz #3

The Spot For Me Suggests: Silfra Fissure, Iceland

My Thoughts: Diving the Silfra Fissure in Iceland sounds like an absolute magical dream… to someone, probably. Me? No. You see, this suggestion involves diving into the sea and swimming about, and I do not want to do this. I do not like being inside of the ocean. The ocean is dark, and it is wet, and I don’t like either of those situations. Also, I don’t know what is down there, but it’s definitely creatures, and I do NOT want to meet them. Don’t get me wrong, I love LOOKING at the ocean, but I am NOT going down there. Do not suggest this to me again!

Quiz #4 (The Final Quiz)

The Spot For Me Suggests: Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium

My Thoughts: This suggestion is rude.

And Here Are My Suggestions For You

As a Fodor’s editor, it is my job to know about places. Therefore, I have also come up with suggestions, based on your personality traits, as I definitely am within that jurisdiction. Here are my own personal expert travel suggestions, based on aspects of who you are as a person.

You Are: The Most Adventurous Person On The Planet

You Should Go To: The World’s Most Dangerous Hike

Reason: If you are a skilled climber with a soul that seeks extreme danger, look no further than Mt. Huashan, located near the city of Huayin in Shaanxi province, China. It’s got a network of famously risky trails, some of which you can only traverse if you attach yourself to the cliffs by holding iron chains and walk across alarmingly janky-looking wooden planks that are “secured” (never a guarantee, sorry!) to the rocks.

You Are: A Gigantic Fan of Christmas

You Should Go To: The World Championships of Santa Clauses

Reason: Every year in Samnaun, Switzerland, this eclectic event is held and 32 teams of people dressed up in full Santa Claus garb compete against each other in various obstacle course situations. If you dream of driving a snowmobile dressed as Santa Claus while attempting to pick up little presents on the ground with a fishing net, this is the destination for you.

You Are: An Introvert Who Prefers to Be Alone

You Should Go To: Bemidji, Minnesota

Reason: You’re looking for a quiet place to unwind, and Bemidji’s got tons of woods for you to walk around in, all by yourself. There are 78 miles of trails in the surrounding forest areas of the town, including an area of 144 acres of forest called the “Lost Forty” that isn’t even depicted on maps. Walk through this uncharted forest all by your lonesome, and fuel up on plenty of quiet time, so that you may talk with people later.

You Are: A Huge Fan of Corn

You Should Go To: The Corn Palace

Reason: If you are a self-proclaimed fan of corn, the vegetable, the World’s Only Corn Palace is definitely the best destination for you. They’ve got it all: yellow corn, blue corn, more colors of corn, festivals sometimes, and a building made up of entirely your favorite vegetable, corn.

You Are: Satan Himself

You Should Go To: Hell, Michigan

Reason: If you are the literal devil, taking a little vacation up from regular hell and still want to feel comfortable here on Earth, I suggest you visit Hell, Michigan, where they pay homage to your likeness in a fun and touristy way. Also, please remember to be nice–I know you’re Satan, but we don’t want any trouble. Have a nice vacation!
