From watermelon-shaped water towers to a replica of the leaning tower of Pisa.
America is a land full of wonders. With the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, Golden Gate Bridge, and brick walls painted with angel wings or the word “Love”—we’re spoiled rotten, aren’t we, Augustus Gloop? And just when we thought we were gagged with IG gold, here comes another one to tickle the tonsils. Wait for it…water tanks.
“Water tanks? Those big ugly cylinders out on the freeway? Fodor’s, you can’t be serious?” We imagine you saying behind your laptop screen. Well, things have gotten pretty serious, so much so that there are annual tank awards honoring the most creative uses of water tank coatings in North America. They’re more prestigious than the Golden Globes right now, dahling. Not convinced? Scroll down and enjoy.
You missed some unusual and funny water towers. Along I-44, about 70 miles west of St. Louis is the water tower for Bourbon, Missouri. It is the old style of water tower, similar to the Coffeepot Water Tower in Stanton, Iowa but at the top it reads, "BOURBON".
In Bartlesville, OK, north of Tulsa, at the interchange of US-75 and US-60, there are three water towers. In Olde English script, they are labeled not with the name of the city of Bartlesville but rather, "HOT", "WARM", and "COLD".
I think the writer is taking it a bit too far to have our beloved Catsup Bottle be compared or put in the same "wonder" category with Michelle Obama. Collinsville, IL (my hometown) is a far reach from Chicago. Michelle doesn't have a clue what else is in the "Land of Lincoln" if it's not in the Chicago area. Southern Illinois is not Chicago.
