May, if you didn’t already know, is National Hamburger Month, that time of year when people mysteriously forget who their cardiologist is and thoughts wander to Quarter Pounders with cheese. To celebrate this special time, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite places in New York City to become one with ground round.
Bar Americain: If a hamburger can be sexy, the Burger Americain served in this warm Midtown restaurant easily wins — a luscious piece of meat, prepared just the way you like it, topped by a choice of Gruyere, cheddar, goat, or blue cheese. Simple and fabulous. (Alas, burgers are only served for lunch, not dinner.) 152 West 52nd Street. 212-965-2700. www.baramericain.com.
BLT Burger: Laurent Tourondel, the busy man behind BLT Steak and BLT Fish, brandishes a cutting-edge know-how with the hamburger. Try the Lamb Merguez Burger, or the Atlantic Salmon Burger, or a 100% Certified Black Angus Beef Burger — a combination of sirloin, short rib, chuck and brisket cut topped with all your favorites. 470 Sixth Avenue. 212-243-8226.
Burger Joint: You might never find this place, it’s so well hidden behind a dingy curtain on the first floor of the Parker Meridien Hotel. The place is small, packed to the gills with diners, and things move very quickly, but the noise and bustle will fade away as soon as you sink your teeth into the flame-broiled Cheeseburger. The fries are heavenly and come in rather grand portions. 118 West 57th Street. 212-708-7414.
Shake Shack: Danny Meyer’s burger joint, in the middle of Madison Square Park, attracts burger aficionados from far and wide. The burger cuts to the chase — it’s a simple piece of meat between two store-bought buns served in a wax wrapper. But the meat couldn’t be fresher and the preparation is typically spot on. Madison Square Park. 212-889-6600. www.shakeshacknyc.com.
Stand: This might just be the best burger joint in NYC. Choices include the Bacon and Egg Cheeseburger, the Mushroom Beef Burger, and the Steak Burger. Those who like Veggie Burgers will be pleased to know that Stand’s rendition puts all others to shame. Side dishes are good, especially the Mashed Sweet Potato and Parmesan. 24 East 12th Street. 212-488-5900.
