Living Language’s Holiday Recipes from Around the World


The holidays are upon us and for most that means making delicious treats to share with family and friends. Are your domestic delicacies in need of some variety? Shrimp and Pork Wontons

Homemade wontons with shrimp and pork in a bowl of hot broth with egg noodles and Chinese vegetables is a very traditional Chinese meal. Growing up in China, a bowl of wonton noodle soup was a great meal after a long day in school.

1/2 lb shrimp finely chopped

1/2 lb ground pork

10 water chestnuts finely chopped

4 scallions finely chopped

1/8 lb Chinese yellow chives (not necessary; adds to the flavor)

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon sesame oil

salt and white pepper

1 pack of yellow square wonton skins

1 small bowl of cold water

1 package of thin yellow egg noodles

1 lb of baby bok choy

Homemade or prepackaged broth/stock


1. For the filling combine the shrimp, pork, water chestnuts, scallions, yellow chives, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper in a larger bowl.

2. Place a wonton skin in your hand and place a spoonful of the filling in the middle. Be careful not to over-stuff the wonton or it will break open when cooking.

3. Dip a finger in the bowl of cold water and moisten the edges of the wonton skin.

4. Fold in half forming a triangle. Then moisten the other two points on the long side and pinch together forming a little basket.

5. Place wontons in batches in a pot of boiling water, return to a boil, and cook 5 mins longer. Remove and serve immediately.


The traditional way to serve wontons is in a bowl of broth with thin Chinese egg noodles and leafy greens. If you want to fry the wontons, use the white round wonton wrappers.
