Berns, the 150-year-old hotel and entertainment venue in central Stockholm, opened the Nosh & Chow Townhouse in late 2012, just one block from Stureplan in the upscale Biblioteksgatan shopping district. It features an elegantly decorated restaurant, courtyard, and a 1920s-style speakeasy bar.

Although the menu is authentically Swedish, it has influences from all around the world (think Singaporean-style Laksa or North African lamb in a phyllo pastry). Mixing and matching is strongly encouraged here so don’t be afraid to order an appetizer from one part of the world and an entrée from another. It may not be cheap but your taste buds will thank you afterward.

Make sure you pay a visit to the bathroom, which was designed by the Spanish interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán, if only to make you feel like you’ve been temporarily transported to Barcelona.



Stockholm may not be known for its inexpensive cuisine but that was before Boqueria, a trendy tapas restaurant, opened in the popular MOOD Gallerian in the spring of 2012.

Quickly named a favorite amongst native Swedes, Boqueria is always buzzing and the welcoming, attentive service is top-notch. As for the tapas, try the croquetas that are oozing with ham and cheese, the tender mini hamburgers, or the to-die-for pulled pork fritters. Their vast wine list is also impressive.

It’s highly recommended that you book a table in advance, but if you haven’t, there’s Torget, the open area just outside. You can still sample some of the tapas dishes from inside, and order a cold Estrella to wash it down.

Taverna Brillo


Opened in December 2012 from the owners of the much-loved Sturehof, Riche, and Teatergrillen eateries, Taverna Brillo brings a little bit of Italy to Sweden. Designed by the renowned Jonas Bohlin, the layout is similar to its sister restaurants but with an enormous dining room (it can hold nearly one thousand people) and is surrounded by a number of bars as well as a market, bakery, an orangerie, even an ice cream café.

The menu features lobster ravioli, osso buco, veal meatballs, as well as macaroni and cheese with truffles. And, because it’s open until 2 am on the weekends, it’s one of the top places right now to see and be seen in Stockholm.



If this is your first visit to Stockholm and you want to experience true Swedish cuisine, look no further than Tradition, which opened last year in the Vasastan neighborhood. The restaurant delivers on its name, serving delicious, authentic Swedish dishes like pickled herring, black pudding, meat-stuffed cabbage rolls, meatballs, and cod. Forget overly gastronomic fare; this restaurant is Swedish comfort food at its very best.

The modern cafeteria-like décor is bright and unpretentious, boasting an extensive wine list as well as a selection of Swedish microbrews, like Wisby Klosteröl and Jämtlands Pilgrim Ale, for the true beer lover.

Flippin’ Burgers


The idea of lining up to eat a hamburger in Sweden may seem preposterous, but one trip to Flippin’ Burgers and you realize it was absolutely worth the wait.

The idea behind Flippin’ Burgers started when the owner Jon Widegren, a former finance guy from Sweden, traveled across the USA eating 64 burgers in just 38 days, all to discover the perfect burger. When he returned, he decided to open a restaurant and voila! The trendiest burger joint in town made its home on the island of Kungsholmen.

The burgers consist of three different parts of high-quality meat from grass-fed cows in Varberg, Sweden; the meat is ground twice and the burgers are never greasy or over-seasoned. A personal favorite is the "Cricket," which is made with fresh cream cheese and spicy jalapenos. Because they don’t take reservations, be prepared to wait for your mouth-watering burger or just come in as they open right at 5 pm.
