American Airlines is shifting gears in their bankruptcy restructuring efforts. After cutting services and reducing employee headcount in recent months, the carrier has started to grow again. Today several new routes were announced, including four new international destinations which will receive service starting next spring. The new routes being launched are:
Dallas/Fort Worth – Seoul, South Korea starting May 9, 2013
Dallas/Fort Worth – Lima, Peru starting April 2, 2013
Chicago O’Hare – Dusseldorf, Germany starting April 11, 2013
New York JFK – Dublin, Ireland starting June 12, 2013
The Seoul route will operate in conjunction with American’s oneworld partner JAL. The Dublin and Dusseldorf routes will operate as part of the airline’s joint business agreement with British Airways and Iberia. The Dusseldorf route will also operate as a codeshare with oneworld partner AirBerlin. Passengers will have access to a number of onward connections on the AirBerlin route network out of Dusseldorf.
Chief Commercial Officer Virasb Vahidi notes that the new destinations will allow the carrier to continue to grow their offerings in the high yield business markets which are important to their continued financial recovery, "We continue to strengthen American’s service from our hub markets to enhance our international offerings and better meet customer demand. â€¦ [T]hese new routes will provide more convenient access for our business travelers to key international destinations."
Most of the routes will be operated by two cabin international configuration aircraft. Seoul is the only route which will see three-cabin service using the carrier’s existing 777-200 aircraft. Seoul is one of the top 10 premium fare markets in the world, so adding three-cabin service on this route is more likely to yield solid returns.
Adding these new routes likely would not have been possible without the restructured pilot and flight attendant contracts which came from the carrier’s bankruptcy filing. And while not all the employees are happy with the current terms, the company appears to be. They’re growing again from their core hub airports and adding connectivity to key markets around the globe. That’s good news for passengers.
