Favorite off beach snorkel spot???
I would love to hear everyone's VOTE on their favorite Caribean island for off the beach snorkeling?
...and in that island, their top snorkel spot???

#1 - Mahoe Bay, Virgin Gorda.
#2 - a second vote for the beaches at Caneel Bay on St. John plus other St. John beaches.
#3 - Loblolly Beach, Anegada
Almost any other place pales in comparison to the above.

Despite the coral dying throughout the V.I.'s 2 couples were just at Caneel and confirmed off 6 of the 7 beaches the snorkeling is still first rate. It was great for us on 6-7 visits in the 1980's and 1990's. Our last visit in 2001 was still great off all 7 beaches.
The folks we met in B.V.I.'s were comparing it to the B.V.I.'s. We met them 2 weeks ago while at Biras Creek on VG.
But go fast if snorkeling is high on your list of activities on a vacation. It beats GC, Bonaire, Cozemal, St. Lucia and T&C's. But with the global warming, pollution, etc. you might want to get to Caneel in 2007.

Grand Cayman. Spot - right before you get to Rum Point. Hubby quit diving when there because we can see so much from snorkeling from the beach.

I enjoyed snorkeling and conducting reef surveys on Turks & Caicos. We stayed at Coral Gardens, since a reef was just 20 feet offshore. Enjoyed watching the turtles come into the grass beds to the right of the reef. It's pristine and you can swim/snorkel around the roped-off reef and peer inward. Id'd over 48 species of reef fish. I know some neat reefs to snorkel in on Great Guana Cay, off of Abaco Island in the Bahamas, if any one's interested. Robert

hi bill, we stayed on tankah bay beach between akumal and tulum. the bay in general was wonderful. it has an underground river from manatee cenote that feeds into the bay about 40 yds off beach. tons of fish here to feed on the nutrients from the fresh water. you can see fish from kayaks.
also, we drove up to yalku lagoon in akumal. we saw parrot fish that were over 2'long. schools of giant blue tangs. herds of 6-7" sergeant majors and all the ususal fish - but big.
same size fish at xel-ha eco/water park.
there seems to be something about the lagoons that makes the fish get very large, as they were not larger than usual in tankah bay - just plentiful.

We went to Akumal on the Riveira Maya with 6 and 8 year old boys last summer and had a fantastic time. Kids loved beach and snorkeling in ocean, at Yalku, and in a cenote. We got around pretty easily in a rental car, and it was not too much for the kids at all. We stayed in a hotel in Playa for a couple of days, then at a condo in Akumal for four days (Las Casitas.) If I went again I'd go straight to Akumal for the whole time.
