Uphill and Down in Bath

A friend and I will be staying in Bath for a few nights in July. Can anyone recommend a place to stay for 160 (plus or minus)pounds?

The Paradise House looks lovely in your photos, but I am concerned about the safety of walking home after dark and going back and forth throughout the day ("Oh, I forgot my jacket. I'm going to run back to the hotel.&quot

I stayed in Bath as a 20-something. I still remember shlepping up and down hills.
A taxi wouldn't be much of a problem for us. However, I wonder if there are nice places to stay down in the flatlands? What areas of the city are conveniently located for site seeing, safe for two ladies, and fairly quiet?

I hesitate to contact Bath Tourism as a I spent the better part of last week online with them trying to figure out a route to Stourhead with little success. I've looked at the recent Bath postings, but didn't see much on accomodations. So I'm relying on Fodorites in hopes that you can once again offer suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Specs - Don't know if it fits your budget but for convenience it's hard to beat this one:

2 mins from the Roman bath/ cathedral/ Pulteney Bridge ...

Hope this helps ...

Specs - If you're still looking, these guesthouses in Pulteney Rd are in 'the flatlands' too.

5 mins walk from the centre ...

Hope this helps ...

P.S. Paradise House is uphill and would mean crossing 'ground zero' to get home. Not ideal unless you take a taxi, I think.

"Safety walking home after dark" I'd have no worries about walking around Bath after dark. We've stayed at the Macdonald's Hotel close by the railway station. It's a pleasant (flat) walk along the river to the Abbey and Roman Baths. Takes about 10 mins strolling.

I'm staying for 5 nights in Bath in July at the Harington which I selected from Rick Steves 2007 Great Britain tour guide. If you're in a bookstore, check it out and you'll see several places in your price range.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. I sent these, and some from TripAdvisor and various travel books to my friend and am awaiting her reply.

We must get these arrangements settled as we leave in a couple of weeks. I
hope I won't be making any panicked, last minute, postings on Fodor's. But
it is good to know that if this is necessary there will be a small band of Fodorites willing to help. Thanks.
