Hi, I have lived in Calif for gosh, 50 years now. Just found family in the Netherlands and they came here for a visit. Did the whole So. Calif thing-Disneyland, malls, theaters- then took them to Vegas and Grand Canyon. Anyways youth hostels are not as popular here as in Europe. I didn't even know we had them until I was informed we did. So I did some exploring and found a website that describes the hostels, has pictures etc. Its www.hiayh.org/ushostel/pnwreg/ca.htm. Also we have some nice B&B's in San Diego. I just found one up that was near the trolleys and the San Diego Zoo. The lady grows herbs and you can walk through the herb garden. E mail me and I'll find the website for the B&B's if you are interested. Let me know if I can be of any more help!! Remember you need a car here and you have to be 21 to rent one!!

last may i stayed at a hostel located in fort mason, within a few minutes walk of fisherman's wharf in san fran. beautiful location, fort mason is a old military base no longer used, but the surrounding grounds are great, many parks and great views. hostel has both private rooms (for 2-4 people) and dormitory style. highly recommended for a cheap stay in a great location.
