Your Own Typos - Correct Them?
I usually reread before posting.
Invariably some errors gets through(thru). What's better, immediately making another post to correct, or avoid cluttering the thread and assume people can make out what you indended? Why do I think of these things? |
I was thinking about the same thing myself. I am a horrible typist. I usually get the correct letters, but in the wrong order. I try to edit, but miss some. Also, sometimes the wonderful edit feature of this site seems to be . . . shall we say . . . 'selective' about making one's edits.
Anyway, I've decided to repost, and therefore clutter the thread, only if a reader might misunderstand, or if my error turns out to be possibly offensive. |
pleope are pertty samrt at fgrieunig out tpyso
|
I reply w/ corrections when the typo changes the meaning - like a missing word or some such. Like "are not" instead of "are"
Or when they typos are soooooo silly I need to explain I'm not smoking something . . . . . |
If your readers would know what you <b>indended</b>, then I don't feel it is necessary to repost, even if some errors <b>gets</b> through. ((*))

<i>Or when they typos are...</i>
You smoking something, janis? ;-) |
gtsnkz_and_beans: LOL!
oops! taht's "frank_and_beans" oops "that's" Oh well! :) |
If you want to be super careful, type your entry into word processing, use the spelling/grammer check. Then copy your answer into fodors.
|
oh, dear, "grammer?"
|
The editing function works if you do the following. Arrow back to your original "Post a Reply" screen (this is essential, if you have already logged off the computer or closed the internet explorer or whatever venue you use, it is too late to do an edit, as far as I can test).
Then click on preview my reply, then hit the edit key and make your changes. Finally click on post my reply and it will not be a double post but a corrected post. I have no excuse except that I can not spell. And once in awhile the edit feature will hiccup, but if you do the above, 98% of the time, it will not. I learned it by testing. |
I'm about the same as Myer -- I don't preview much, as I just don't care that much or want to spend that much time on public message boards. I type fairly well and spell well, so most of it is correct, but an occasional typo (or just thinking of a different word than you type) happens. I wouldn't even spend my time editing and copying to WORD, etc., geez, I already have a job.
I only correct it when it really might not make the post clear. I think it is unfortunate when people correct the typo in a subsequent post when it was some trivial, meaningless thing. Who cares, don't clutter up the thread, is my feeling. I think people worry about typos too much and are insecure about that. I don't think people object to occasional, real typos on threads, I think whenever anyone does remark on that, it really is usually a reference to poor spelling, lack of punctuation, bad grammar, etc., not a real minor typo. |
I use IE Spell..spellchecker for Internet. Learned about it on a different BBS. Go to www.iespell/com/index.htm
It is GREAT. |
Hey Christina,
I'm not like you. I do frequent a few public boards such as this one. I don't know how to spell half the words I've read in this thread alone. I do reread once and attempt to correct. However, change one word and that could cause other parts of the sentence to be thrown out of kilter. JJ5, your explanation was too long and I lost my concentration. scarborough, if you type into some word processors and then copy and paste, some characters such as apostrophe get changed to a different character. |
I leave mine to stay and ferment until the editors take them out with the trash. [(
|
This thread made me HOWL. We all have too much time on our hands... lololol
|
That explanation was not too long. Try it and it works. It has basically 4 for short steps. Backplace, preview, edit, post. 4 clicks.
I was thanked every time I put it on these boards by numerous people who use it. |
...and don't forget to Promenade! :S-
|
Most forums have an "Edit your post" function that can be used after the fact. Why Fodors can't upgrade their forums to include that option is beyond me - maybe because they don't really care?
|
I make typos here all the time. When I do, I think bank to the old NY bank Manufacturer's Hanover that once sent out an annual report that referenced their "Certified Pubic Accountants"
and invited clients to the Bob Hope Dessert Classic Tournament. |
I'll repost to correct an error that would affect a search -- like Pza. Novana for that popular spot in Rome --
but not for a routine slip of the fingres. |
