Your New Orleans Eating Recommendations
Our first trip to New Orleans is in April. Looking for some good recommendations for restaurants and what we can expect to pay. Thanks

I've been to New Orleans but we camped on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain and ate at our campground. However, on a defunct travel forum these were recommended:Drink rich coffee with sweet beignets in 1840 Antoine’s; (New Orleans' oldest restaurant);eat at Cochon Butchers for brilliant food ($11-16 for a sandwich) and get ice cream at Angelo Brocato's.

I love eating in New Orleans. Here are some ideas to get you started - these are all in the FQ or the Faubourg Marigny, which as a first timer will probably be where you spend most of your time:
Napoleon House - great old bar, known for mufaletas - this is my first stop every time I go to New Orleans for a muf and an Abita Amber Muriels - a bit on the nicer side, classic creole dishes Gumbo Shop - as the name says, also other creole dishes... Johnny's Po-Boys - this is a hole-in-the-wall type place that serves great po-boys and also really good breakfast Ruby Slipper Cafe - breakfast Stanley - breakfast Verti Marte - take out po-boys Coops Place - fried chicken Cafe Beignets - beignets Three Muses - Also has good music Marigny Brassiere |
We LOVED Pasquale's Manale (famous for its BBQ shrimp) over near Tulane.

We stayed in the 1896 O'Malley House which is right off Canal Street and a very short walk to the streetcar line. One of our favorite restaurants was a block away called Mandinas. It's a "locals" place and the food and drinks are wonderful. Try the Onion Rings - best we ever had.

Second Muriels. We wanted to attend the Jazz Brunch at Commanders Palace, but not able to get reservations.
Instead, enjoyed the brunch at Court of Two Sisters. Lovely garden patio. |
Muriels is very nice, and if you go to the backside of the restaurant, there's a spiral staircase leading up to a "haunter séance" room where you can have a drink.
We love Court of Two Sisters and Brennen's in the French Quarter. Dinner is around $25 per plate on average. Peche on Magazine street is amazing for seafood. Cochon and Cochon Butcher as mentioned above are great, especially for lunch and sandwiches. Gris Gris in the Garden District is very nice as well, especially for brunch. |
