Most romantic weekend? A weekend away -- anywhere -- with my sweetheart! Even now that we're retired we enjoy those, and look forward to our next one for a few days around Valentine's Day.

However, years ago, when our children were little, we'd have our regular trustworthy sitter come for the weekend and we'd just go away to a hotel in another city once or twice a year.

We'd check in, go to a nearby mall, and wander hand in hand, looking over foods, wines, etc., before buying whatever we felt we might like for the weekend. Then we'd head back to our room and just plain snuggle in for the weekend.

Sure, we'd eat out if we felt like it, but mainly this was all about escape from routine, work, kids and phones! We'd eat or drink whatever we liked, whenever we liked -- and do whatever else we wanted to, too, whenever we wanted to. It was bliss!

We highly recommend getaways like that for married couples, especially if they have children. To just be a couple again, even for a weekend, can be very nourishing, to say the least. And it need not be expensive, really.

....updating...

3 day weekend in SF on 3-17....and a drive home thru Sonoma.:-X:-X:-X

It could not have been any more perfect...well if the quick pix I bought would have won us the $180 Mega Mil Lotto, then maybe. ;)

Kal, you lush....
Since y'all have revived this thread, I had an incredibly romantic weekend a couple times since, lol. Southwest just deposited 2 tickets in my account and I'm sitting here with my calendar and lust in my heart. My next hubby only trip is March 23 for the Cinci wine fest, but that's company stuff. However, May 7-9 is Chicago for Wine Spectator's grand event. We've already booked Aria restaurant (divine). In fact, I think I'll start another thread....

I was just wondering why this post is in the New Mexico forum???

holly Feb 28th, 2007 06:53 PM

...because someone mentioned New Mexico earlier in the thread, so it gets referenced there.

Firenze (Florence) all of it every inch is romantic. My husband gave us a lovely trip to Europe for our 25th. We started out flying First Class British Airways ( those lovely miles) If you have never traveled first class on B/A it is amazing. From the First Class lounges to the wonderful treatment in First Class. When you get on the plane they hand you a bag for your overnight stay on the plane. Warm, comfy jammies. The genteel WaitStaff serves you delicous gourmet meal with top class wine. You slip into your jammies and then awake to fresh hot coffee and a substantial English breaksfast. I know I digress- Out of all this our time in Firenze was romantic- crazy lovely romantic. After 24 years of raising kids. My husbands planning of the trip and all the details was wonderful

Durango, CO!!!! with side trips to Ouray and Telluride. I was planning a getaway to Mesa Verde and talked to the central reservations in Durango and they helped me plan the best trip ever! We ended out going back this winter to ski. Ask the chamber for their central reservations office.

The Canadian Rockies-Lake Louise, Banff, and Jasper at he Fairmont Hotels-We rented a car and had a picnic near one of the beautiful lakes. The scenery is unbelievable. We loved sipping wine in the lounge at Lake Louise, too.

Haney20 Jun 15th, 2007 07:12 AM

Sorry- The Canadian Rockies trip was longer than a weekend, but still romantic.

BayouGal Jun 15th, 2007 08:52 AM

Perfect timing, Haney! We're doing the research on a trip to the Canadian Rockies right now. Care to share specifics? Do you have a trip report on Fodors?

Our weekend trip to Denali Park. We stayed in a nice little cabin outside the park. BBQ our dinner each night, soated in the hot tub under the stars, went white water rafting, and hiked in the park. Saw wolves, bears, and caribou. It was relaxing and great fun! Also, 2 for 1 because it was "off season" (September). We were young and couldn't have afforded it otherwise! Good memories.

I took my wife to One and Only Palmilla last year for our anniversary. We both loved it and she wants to go back. I'm the kind of guy that goes to a place once then starts looking for another good one. I keep telling her we need to go somewhere for our 25th anniversary in 2008 and take a couple we like to travel with. I know she wants to go back to Hawaii again but I'm not in a big hurry. Every time I start talking about the 25th anniversary trip she brings up One and Only Palmilla. I start saying let's go to St. Bart's or let's go back to Bermuda.

Anyway the ROMANTIC part is I have booked us to fly back to One and Only Palmilla for our anniversary with the couple we like to travel with a lot. No one has told her anything about it. I'm the planner and she doesn't participate at all other than packing her bags. Someone on here mentioned their husband called her at work and said pack your bags. That's what I'm going to do. My wife doesn't understand directions good at all. WI am going to tell her the night before we are going to an island and pack up. When we get to the airport in Memphis and catch the flight to Dallas she will be asking where we are going. During our layover in Dallas and then boarding the flight to SJD she will still be asking but she won't know until we hit the ground in SJD.

How about it.

BayourGal--I am not Haney, but we have been to the Canadian Rockies several times. Fantastic area!!! Our favorite place to stay is in Lake Louise, on the Bow Valley Parkway, called Baker Creek Chalets. We found it by chance on our honeymoon years ago and have been back a few times. Love it!

otto Jun 17th, 2007 04:43 PM

amdc, that sounds really cool! that sounds romantic to me. ;-)

i might say barcelona. we ate like kings, the hotel was fab. or our weekend trip to lake george, new york. not exotic, but one of the nicest weekends ever with my man.

Little_Man Jun 17th, 2007 05:52 PM

Ike, no offense, but booking a trip with another couple would take all the romance out of it for me! But different strokes --

We live outside NYC and our favorite weekend trip is towards the Delaware -- our favorite Inn the Woolverton. Rooms are spacious, feather beds (we purchased one to take home) with high thread count sheets, many rooms are actually little cottages with terraces, balconey. Only a few of those on property and then the main house with some really stunning suites. Food is really great for brunch. There's a great deal of near by dining in Lambertville, New Hope, Stockton and I love driving the PA side up the river.

Now we've been doing day trips as we just don't have the time to be away overnight. Went to NYC last weekend and ate lunch at Pastis, cruised over to SoHo to do some serious shopping, then to a fantastic authentic Thai Spa on Spring street. We each had an hour and a half of rubbing, bending, twisting turning and all the little details were just right -- like being in Bangkok for an hour.

This past weekend we drove in PA to see the Mercer home, Fonthill, crazy inventive man that he was with his poured concrete house festooned everywhere with tiles from his tile works and those he collected. Then dinner in Doylestown, check out some art in new Hope, and back north again along the river. It's not crowed along there like the shore.

Our real summer trip will be 4 days on Cape Cod ending with a police concert -- haven't been around North Smerican surf and sea for some time so defnitely looking forward to that -- we booked some very nice inns

Ike Jun 18th, 2007 06:21 AM

Frankie.....you said.........

"Ike, no offense"

Why did you even take time to post then. You go your way and I'll go mine. I like to travel with friends. Ever done that. You try to take the romance out of it. It won't work.

BayouGal Jun 18th, 2007 04:37 PM

Thanks, mms! You should be leaving soon on your own trip, right? It sounds like it will be pretty romantic. ;-) Looking forward to the TR.

Fodorite018 Jun 18th, 2007 05:27 PM

BayouGal--Yes, we leave in a couple days. Not really romantic though...just us 3 girls, lol!

BayouGal Jun 18th, 2007 05:30 PM

Boy, I really confused that, huh?! :))

Maybe it's the location that I remember as romantic . . . or am I having ANOTHER senile moment?! ;-)

Fodorite018 Jun 18th, 2007 05:45 PM

BG--LOL! Well, we did have a nice romantic weekend in Seattle a month or so ago.

trippinkpj Jun 18th, 2007 06:33 PM

Our most romantic weekends are probably our Carmel/ Monterey/ Pacific Grove, CA weekends. :-)

Elizabeth Pointe Lodge in Amelia Island, Fl. We stayed in the Ocean House in the Breezes suite; would like to stay in the Tradewinds suite above it for a better view next time. Check out the website for pictures. Also loved the Hamanassett B & B in Chester county, Pennsylvania.

A recent weekend away was camping in Acadia National Park, Maine. Nothing more romantic than sitting in front of a fire, drinking champagne out of plastic cups and eating lobster with my hubby!

kasperlie Jul 25th, 2007 04:17 PM

This is a great thread, but tough to answer. We've been so many incredibly romantic places, so I will just limit it to ones that were truly weekends (or long weekends).

I have to also say the Canadian Rockies, Lake Louise area. We stayed at the Post Hotel and I can't think of a better place. If you are planning a trip to the area and have the money to stay there. . . WOW. Check out their website. It's like staying in a Swiss Chalet resort.

12/15/00 Pigeon Forge, TN Hubby and I rented a Chalet called "Above the Clouds" for a week. We woke up to beautiful sunrises, soaked in the hot tub that overlooked the mountains, (top-of-the-mountain seclusion) and sat by the fireplace. We literally were "Above the Clouds" physically and emo. ;-)

New York City - wandered around the city seeing the usual tourist sites. Had an unbelievable wander through the Met and found an unexpected dinner in Soho.

New York is a great place to loose yourself.
