Yosmite vs. Carmel, this weekend w/10 year old boy
 

The weather this weekend is supposed to be fine. My son has Friday off, and I can't decide where we should go for a quick weekend trip. He loves art and scupture, that's why I thought of Carmel. He also loves nature and bike riding, thus the Yosemite thoughts. Any ideas/preferences? I know they totally different from each other, I just don't know what a 10 year old boy would prefer.

It's still kind of winter in Yosemite. In Carmel there is that great town beach, he can bike ride on 17 mile drive, and other nature on Pt. Lobos, and the Monterey Aquarium.

Carmel has more variety, hence more choices, than Yosemite.

I would go to the Carmel/Monterey area. You could rent bikes and ride around the Recreation Trail in Pacific Grove, it's a fun ride. :)

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is also not to miss, you could have a nice lunch at Schooner's Bistro at the Monterey Plaza Hotel. Have fun on your travels! ***kim*** ((#))

I'd go to the Monterey area too. Yosemite is great, but as others have said, the weather isn't as nice this time of year.

Well, not all 10-year olds are alike, but if it was me, I'd prefer Yosemite. The weather forecast is good for this weekend, and the waterfalls are at their spring time flows. The Ansel Adams gallery usually has some good displays of photography if he wants some art.

Touring the art galleries in Carmel would have had limited appeal to my 10-year old self, though the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the nearby beach activities would be cool.

I'm headed for Yosemite myself in a few weeks. I rarely go during the summer, preferring the other seasons - spring is especially nice with the full waterfalls.

Wherever you go--get reservations--this weekend is the beginning of Spring Break for many CA schools.

I would definitley go to Yosemite. I think a 10 year old would get bored in Carmel. There are so many more activities for him in Yosemite. I would imagine it would be beautiful at this time of year!

Normally on a question like this for a 10 year old boy, I would suggest Yosemite but it is still pretty cold up there so I would go to Carmel.

Are you sure you can get a room in Yosemite for this weekend?

My son loves both and we've been to both every year since he was 3 (he's 17 now). I agree with (most of) the others -- Carmel/Monterey. You can rent bikes in Monterey either at Cannery Row or at the wharf and there are some really great long rides on the bike path that travels down past Pacific Grove, past wonderful wild life and sea life. Then, you have the Aquarium in Monterey and the art shops in Carmel. Don't forget to stop for candy at the sweet shop in Carmel -- they have one of the best arrays of English chocolate (Yorkie Bars!) on the West Coast.

I definitely think it is a toss up, but wanted to comment on Carmel specifically. A few people have posted that Carmel might be boring for a 10 year old, and I think if you look at just Carmel, then yes, it can be. I grew up in that area, and I thought Carmel was pretty lame when I was that age too. It definitely is geared more toward upscale adults than kids. BUT - Monterey and Pacific Grove were always a lot of fun.

Carmel for a ten year-old boy who likes art and sculpture? Take him to Richard MacDonald's gallery on San Carlos and 5th- must-do! If he's into Yosemite, you can go to the Ansel Adams Gallery at The Inn at Spanish Bay (Pebble Beach).

If it's windy, you can fly a kite on Carmel beach. Pt. Lobos is the best for hiking and seeing nature up close and personal.

Carmel/ Monterey for sure.
