Yosemite Uh-Oh

hey guys,

i'm worried that the cables for the half dome won't even be up when i get there.

i'll be there on june 1-3. will they be up by then? it's only a few weeks away and they're not up yet.

curious george,

dan

cherie May 25th, 1999 08:19 AM

Ah, common, Dan! An 81 year old dude made the climb to the top yesterday. It was in the local papers and the news. Do it. The cables must have been there for the old dude...

-Babar

Nice try Cherie.
Quit teasing poor dan, he's put a lot of planning into this trip. Plus, that geezer did a significantly harder climb than what Dan has in mind, on a different hunk of rock.

Dan- I found out something interesting this weekend. They don't take the cables down at all. what they do do is take down the wooden cross bars and the supporting poles for the cables. So, the cables lie against the rock all year. They guy I was talking to has "Batmanned" up the cable route without the poles and crossbars two times. He likes it better that way, no crowds.
I'd say if you're feeling adventurous...

Daniel, I imagine they put them up in time for Memorial Weekend. By the way, Yosemite is an abolute insane asylum that weekend.

Nice try my----. I don't mean to tease Dan. I want to read all about his trip when he returns. But I stand by my response. I go to Yosemite with entire classes of students on a regular basis. Lots of age groups climb. Dan should be just fine. Do it Dan. If the tourists get you down, remember to start out early....before the buses arrive from Frisco. (Oh-oh...I called it Frisco.)

bruno (french) May 27th, 1999 03:32 PM

Hey cherie, in France we say Frisco too but here nobody understand when I say Frisco. It's like MacDo for McDonald's.
cp May 27th, 1999 04:03 PM

That's okay Bruno, she doesn't know the difference between Half Dome and El Capitan, so we will certainly forgive her for using the odious "Frisco" when she means something other than a ski town in Colorado.

cp--if thats a real name....can you understand big words like neophyte-bashing? I thought one wasn't supposed to be so rude on Fodors. The entry only proved my point that if an older gent can climb...so can Dan. Now get off my rear, cp. There's room in this site for us ALL. While you argue, Dan's probably on his way.

Bruno, actually I think McDoo is an excellent name for McDonald's.

CP is rude and prejudiced against the older generation, who shold be respected, not referred to as "geezers." CP, let's see YOU climb up a flight of stairs, let alone a mountain, when you are 80.
Bruno: bon voyage a vous.

cherie Jun 1st, 1999 08:04 AM

Thanks, Bruno....I say Bulmiche and the Parisians know where I am going. (It isn't to El Capitan, CP.)

I can't believe this keeps coming up, so let me set my position straight.
Cherie - I think it is great that you wanted to encourage Dan to go up the back of Half Dome. However, at time of writing the cable supports were NOT up. You implied that they WERE up when you said "an 81 year old dude made the climb to the top... the cables must have been there for the old dude.". The old dude was Gerry Bloch, he climbed El Cap, not Half Dome. As a climber, I have immense respect for that man and his achievement. I hope I am at least half as able as he when I am that old.
I apologize for the rude remark I made. However, I hope you know that the tone of your second post seemed intentionally irritating.
Regards, cp.

CP- I appologize, too. I didn't mean to irritate you. It has become a running joke around here, though, to know the difference betwen the two. My kid is up in Y as we write. His entire 8th grade class went up to the trails around the Valley Floor. Since I am afraid of heights, I should mind my manners when I discuss climbers. Have a great day. I'll behave. -Cher PS: previous post didn't post or this will be a double-print. Sorry...you'd think I'd have the hang of this by now.
