yosemite trip help...
 

taking my 11 and 12 year old sons to yosemite in july. Hoping for suggestions on must do's for kids. We plan on speding some time in high country on day hikes fishing. We have reservations for 3 nights at a cabin in camp curry village-the yosemite lodge was full. I will appreciate any suggestions

As Janis mentioned there is a chance that Tioga Pass will not be open when you go. You don't mention when in July. If it is early July then you better have a back up plan of routes and other places to stay.

All the other passes, Hwy 50, Hwy 88, Hwy 4 & Hwy 108 are open.

Bike riding is my son's favorite thing to do there; after that, swimming in Yosemite Lodge's pool ($2), hike up to Vernal Falls; easy walk to Yosemite Falls; ranger talks and walks; visitor's center; eating pizza at Curry Village; river raft floats down the icy Merced.

We returned from Yosemite last week. According to a ranger we spoke with, the road is plowed, but opening is being held up because of continued avalanches. They only opened the road as far as Yosemite Creek within the last few days. They hope to have the road completely open by July 4 weekend.

We are currently having rain in the Bay Area. I heard the Sierra might be getting a foot of new snow. Good luck with Tioga Pass being open in time for your visit. You can go to the Yosemite web site to find out the status before you leave home. In any case, you'll have a terrific time. The hike to Mirror Lake is really pretty. About 3 or 4 miles to walk around it, I think.

I just wrote a reply to another post like yours, so check that out. Also, in late May MANY< MANY of the cabins were flooded (as in, the cabins are on three foot stilts to start with and the water was about 6 feet high... no way to go in the cabin without being in water up to your chest). The flooded cabins that we saw were in "housekeeping" (one of Yosemite's cabin classifications). These were in a lower part of the valley about 1/4 mile from curry village proper (where the stores and showers are). You might want to call to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into.

All streams are RUSHING! I've never fished in Yosemite, so maybe that's somewhere else? Also, water level in the rivers last year was about 6 feet below the bridges. In May it was about 6 inches below the bridges. The teenage kids in our group usually jump off bridges into the river (don't know if that's allowed, probably not) but this year even they had no interest in that!@
