We are a family of four two adults and 2 teens.
We are going from Yosemite to Crater Lake.
which is a better way to go

Choice # 1 - Stay on the eastern side of CA;going to Lake Tahoe,Carson city, virgina city.what else to do on that side of the state?

Choice # 2 From Yosemite go to Sf then up to Crater Lake. going up the coast

Just saw your post on Yosemite vs Sequoia/Kings Canyon. We need to know what time of the year you are going.

Hi MelissaBeckoff

The two options are totaly different. Both would be great drives. It really depends on what you want to see. #2 You have Redwoods and the coast. #1 You have the Serria Nevada and the Cascade volcanos. The costal route will take a lot more time. Eureka to Crater Lake is 4.5 plus hours with no long stops. If you do #1 you can stop at Lassen, Burney Falls, Mt Shasta. before going into Oregon. My vote is #1

Have fun

I would go the Sierra route, via Lake Tahoe, taking 89 to Lake Almanor, Lassen, MacArthur-Burney Falls State Park, and then veer off to Lava Beds National Monument to Crater Lake. If you are camping, Medicine Lake has a large National Forest campground. The dirt roads to the lake are in good condition in the summer, and can be easily driven with a sedan, no 4 wheel drive required.

I'll second Michael's route.

I would keep going on 89 til you hit I-5 at Mt. Shasta. Explore the Dunsmuir/Mt. Shasta/Mc Cloud area, then head north to Ashland & the Rogue Valley and access Crater Lake that way.
August is great because you can take the Tioga Pass road, (Eat at the Gourmet Gas Station), and take the rim road all the way around Crater Lake.
Check your Crater Lake Post for Lodging/food links from me.
