Yosemite-Landslide/Road Block ?

Please help clarify my understanding of where these resorts are so I can cancel one...

Bug Resort, Midpines
Wawona Hotel

I have res at both properties for the same dates in July. I understand 140 is where the road block is, right? Is that the road I would need to travel into the park from the Bug Resort? If so, I will go ahead & cancel now....I was so hesitant to commit to either property after reading so many poor reviews of most lodging in the area...

Will this road block change my route/travel time from Monterey to Yosemite?

Thanks for any info!

Hi tinamidon, evidently 140 is anticipated to be closed for a year! But call the lodgings where you have reservations. They can advise you as to the other routes to get into Yosemite. But please, cancel one or the other (or both) if you do not want to keep the reservations so they will open up to others that need reservations. Best regards.

tina,

A quick check on Mapquest might help.

Yes I believe you should cancel the Bug. You would have to detour around the closure.

It's such a shame about the slide cutting off places lots of visitors have reservations and businesses are losing so much. Towns west of the slide like Midpines and Mariposa are just two of many that will suffer with the loss of easy access to Yosemite. The slide is very big and it is unlikely that it will open even after a year. Perhaps they'll even have to reroute the road to get around the slide. If you'd like to seee how bad it is here's link to an aerial view:

That site also provides updates on the status of the road.

Thanks for the link Suzie - that is a big slide and that hillside definitely doesn't look stable.

For the OP - I would stay at Wawona and come into the park from the south (Hwy 41). This wont really affect your travel time from Monterey - it might add a half hour of driving, plus any additional wait at the park entrance due to extra traffic that would have otherwise gone through the Hwy 140 entrance.

Can anyone advise the route to take out of Yosemite to enable us to drive to Monterey, as it looks like the slide is on the road we were orginally going to take. Thanks

Leaving Yosemite to go to Monterey you should exit out of the south and head to Oakhurst on 41. When you get to 145 go right all the way to 99. Take 99 to 152 all the way to where it splits and then take the 156 down to 1.

About 3.5 hours from Oakhurst which is about 1 hour from the valley.

Thanks Suzie, have had a look at the route on the map and it looks the best alternative.

I ended up cancelling my "res" @ Bug Resort...which by the way, when I called, they had no reservation even though I have a copy of the confirmation e-mail they sent...probably just as well we not stay there!

Guess we'll be @ Wawona for the 2 nights. I was looking for a room Ahwahnee for one night but the only thing available was for 2 people...not 4. Oh well, goes to show, there ARE still rooms available at this late date. I'll try again in a couple weeks. Don't really want to spend the $$, but it looks gorgeous.
