Yoo hoo! Calling Neopolitan!

Hi Neo,
I tacked this question on to a 2006 trip report of yours but I didn't think you'd see it, so I'm creating a new post.

My sister-in-law and my two nieces (12 and 15 years old) may be looking for an apartment in San Diego for a week or two this summer. I love the look of vrbo 72389 in your post and want to recommend it to her but I notice that the price says $3800 per month. I usually assume that a monthly price means that you can only rent it by month. Is that not true? It seems that on their current calendar, somone has rented for a week and if I remember correctly, you did as well.

Also, I don't know anything about San Diego -- would that be a good neighbourhood for a single woman and two young girls to stay in? I assume they'll have a car. Which brings up another question -- did the apartment price include parking.

Thanks so much for your help with this.

I think TahitiTams also could help with San Diego neighborhoods.

hdm-We had a small San Diego GTG at this apartment when Neo was visiting and the apartment was amazing. This apartment is only a one bedroom, though, so unless they have a sleeper sofa, don't know if there is enough room for three. The neighborhood would be fine for your sister-in-law and nieces as far as safety is concerned. I don't know where they are coming from but I know that my girls when they were 12 and 15 would enjoy staying at the beach a lot more. Especially if they are from an area that doesn't have a beach. But the apartment is in a good location for all the sights in San Diego.

That's good to know, Paula. There must be a sleeper sofa or something because I think it says 'sleeps 3 to 4'. I'll check it out again.

Thanks for the tip about staying near the beach. Are there specific neighbourhood names I should look for that are 'beachy'?

Del Mar/La Jolla/Coronado are great beach areas..Mission Beach has alot of beach rentals for the summer.
I don't know what their budget is but things are alot more in the summer..the girls would love the beach..lots to do.
Neo's place was awesome and if I remember correctly, it was in the Little Italy/Downtown SD area.
Loved to help your SIL out!

Coronado, Pacific Beach or La Jolla would be my choices. Now that I think about it, though, it might be hard to get an apartment by the beach for this summer might be difficult. Probably the least you could find something for would be $2000 a week and Coronado would be more expensive. The summers in San Diego are taken over by Zonies (people from Arizona) and I can call them that because some of them are my family and friends. They rent out the same apartments every year.

It would certainly be worth a look at Vrbo to see what they have. There are also a couple of other websites that I can give you later. I was helping my friend (from Arizona) find a place and I stumbled across a few other places beside VRBO. I am running out the door now for work but can send them to you later.

Looks like TahitiTams was posting the same time as me. Sorry can't type-that
sentence "it might be hard to get an apartment by the beach for this summer might be difficult" was just a little confusing LOL. Anyway you get my drift.

You guys are the best! I'm not going to worry about availability. I'm just going to give her the websites (and Neo's vrbo number) and let her take it from there. If she leaves it too long -- well, that's her business. This is about as far as I'm going to get involved.

I'll forward her any websites you think are good ones and then she's on her own!

Here I am. Thanks for alerting me on the Europe board, I'm not sure I would have seen this as it was already past the first 50.

I notice too that it now only has a monthly price. I suspect that may be because of the condo requirements. We rented for just one week. The apartment was really fabulous. Yes, it is a sleeper sofa in the living room, and there is a benefit of an extra half bath off the living room. There is underbuilding parking and that was included.

I loved being there. We walked to things downtown, and also to Anthony's and other waterfront restaurants. The depot is right behind the apartment and we took the train up to old town.

I'd suggest they contact the owner and see if maybe they will still rent by the week. We had to "pretend" to be friends using the apartment if anyone asked us, but no one ever did. I suspect that weekly rentals are not allowed or frowned upon by the condo association.

Incidentally we changed our plans originally from going to San Diego before LA, because the price of the San Diego apt dropped to half the day after Labor Day -- which is when we ended up taking it for some major savings.

That was a great condo, but it would be a bit crowded with three people sleeping. How will the girls like sleeping together? I know my own kids would not like that at all.

I think the prime areas to look in would be TT's list-Del Mar, La Jolla and Coronado. Some parts of Mission Beach and Pacific Beach might be OK. tell your sister-in-law to make sure there is parking included as it's difficult to park in any of the beach areas.

Thanks again everyone. I don't think three in the apartment would be a problem. When they travel, they usually stay in hotels and I think they just get a room with two doubles. Either the girls sleep in one bed together or one of them sleeps with her mom. I'm sure an apartment like yours, Neo, would offer them much more room than they're used to and they'd enjoy having some meals at home.

I'll pass along all your excellent ideas to my SIL.
