YNP and GT lodging
 

My husband and I would like to spend 7-8 days in YNP and Grand Tetons late Sept. next fall. Are we too late already to book rooms at Inns or lodges in these parks? We don't want to stay outside the parks. What are your favorite places to stay. I figure 3 places in Yellowstone and don't know if we need more than 1 in GT. What is the best way to book and how far in advance.

No, you are not too late. If you don't get the place you want, make reservations at a second choice. Then keep checking, rooms will probably open up at your first choice if you watch closely. Then cancel the rooms you booked first - you can cancel up to 2 days before your reservations, I think.

for GTNP try jackson lake lodge. we were "walk-ins" the weekend after labor day and they had several rooms available. probably 1 or 2 days at this location is enough. theres really not much to do unless you take some type of organized tour....a raft trip or horse ride. theres a place in the lobby that will organize these trips.

We stayed at the Cascade Lodge in the Canyon area of Yellowstone and loved it!! We also stayed at the cabins at Lake Yellowstone Hotel (not the Lake Lodge cabins) and those were fine, but a little smaller. Both were very clean.

Old Faithful Inn and Lake Hotel are my favorite places to stay. You will love the park! Have fun!

For that time of the year, you should have no problem finding availability in both parks. Logistically, you'll do fine staying in just 2 places in Yellowstone. We found the Old Faithful Inn and Lake Yellowstone Lodge both geographically convenient and fine facilities. In the Teton, Jackson Lake Lodge is probably the most conveniently located.

I agree that you shouldn't have major reservation problems in Sept. We've stayed at Jackson Lake Lodge and very much liked it. Try getting room on the "back side" - unbelievable views of the Tetons. However, our favorite without a doubt was Jenny Lake Lodge (also in GT). Extremely nice cabins/lodging and the food was world-class. It's a little more out of the way (and therefor quieter), but well worth it IMHO. We've used both places as a base to visit YNP.
