local girl staying in NYC for the weekend with my husband.
We like dramas and musicals-My husband loves dramas and i enjoy musicals.LOL
Thinking about Memphis or La Cage?Also wanted to see The Adams Family but I do not think my husband would love that.
If there is a drama out there that is worth seeing please let us know

Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino (if you can get tickets). Time Stands Still with Laura Linney. Perhaps Mrs. Warren's Profession. Addams Family has really gotten rotten reviews. If your husband doesn't like musicals, I wouldn't take him to that. If you haven't seen "In the Heights" I highly recommend that (for a musical) and it will be closing in Jan.

There are a couple of dramas worth seeing--a revival of Driving Miss Daisy starring Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones and a new play entitled Time Stands Still starring Laura Linney.
And, you can't miss with La Cage Aux Folles.

For a musical, I would also add "A Little Night Music." "La Cage" was excellent. I would not recommend "Mrs. Warren's Profession." When will you be in NY? There are some things that haven't opened yet.

"Billy Elliott" -- a musical, but dramatic; would work for both of you.

I would add "Next to Normal"-both a drama and a musical and you can get discounted tickets, same for "Billy Elliot"

We will be in NYC this weekend(last minute decision) so hopefully I can tickets to something good.Saturday afternoon is our slotted time for a show so we should be able to find some good seats.I hope lol
Any thoughts about Memphis?

We loved La Cage and Billy Elliot on our visit last month - tickets gotten for both at the TKTS ticket booth at half price same day performance. Next to Normal - also OK, also half price at the booth, but the story line is not the greatest.

Memphis is good but imo not as good as La Cage or In the Heights.

For a Saturday matinee this weekend, I'd buy discount tickets in advance rather than taking the TKTS route for a couple reasons:
1. The lines at TKTS will be long, meaning that you'll be wasting a lot of time in line on Saturday.
2. The choice at TKTS for weekend performances may not be that great.
Sure, the tickets won't be as cheap at TKTS, but I'd go the route of checking out broadwaybox.com and playbill.com and getting tickets either in advance of arriving or taking the discount offer to the box office as soon as you arrive in the city.

If your husband is a sports fan, consider Lombardi. We saw it a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. The acting is top notch and it's the kind of play that everyone can enjoy, sports fan or not.

It's theater in the round and there are virtually no bad seats in the house, the worst seats are about 12 rows from the stage.

HowardR - amazingly, all the times we were at TKTS last month, we waited no more than 15 minutes to get to the front of the line. We arrived about 30-40 minutes before the TKTS booth opened and then once it did, we were quickly at the window. We thought it was quite unusual since it was also not a one-time occurrence. Maybe now that we are getting closer to Thanksgiving, it may not be true. But for us, at end-Sept/beg. Oct. that was the situation. We also had many options to choose from. I guess it is just what you are willing to take a chance on.

Flame123, were you in the TKTS line on a Saturday morning? If so, I'm surprised that the lines were that short. Admittedly, I haven't used TKTS in a few years, but in the "old days" I remember having to get in line at 9 a.m. (an hour before it opened) on a Saturday morning in order to be at the window in a half hour or less once it opened.
Historically, the best time to go to avoid a long line is an hour or two before showtime. The negative in doing that obviously is that your choice of is less that it was earlier that day.

Actually HowardR, yes we were, for one of them and it was when we saw Billy Elliot!!

Yes, I agree in the "old days" I remembered having much longer waits. So as I wrote before, maybe it was luck, maybe it was the time of year, or maybe this is just the way it works now. Anyone else have similar, or different, experiences lately?

Based on the majority I think we will go with la cage.I can get a good price for the cabaret seats and it sounds like fum.
I have decided to purchase them prior.

it looks like the only discount available now are for the regular seats not the Cabaret seats.Any thoughts on whether they are worth it.

What are the cabaret seats? How do they differ from the "regular" seats? The regular seats are fine......How good they are would, obviously, depend on where they are located!

The cabaret seats are right along the stage, it is set up to look like tables at the club in the play. I would think you would get a pretty stiff neck since you have to look almost straight up.

We also saw La Cage just before we saw Billy Elliot, loved them both. Very different, but both were top notch.
