Yellowstone-Where to stay
 

I plan to spend a week in Yellowstone in early September. I plan on staying a few days at several lodges or hotels at different locations in order to see as much of the park as possible.
I have never visited the park and would appreciate your recommendations as to the best places to stay.
The following listed lodges have vacancies for the time I plan to visit.
(I assume the Inn and cabins w/o bath have a communal bath house.)

Canyon Lodge is fairly new and good size.
Lake Yellowstone hotel is nice and we loved our dinner there.
I would also book the Old Faithful Inn and keep calling for cancellations of accomodations with bath. Old Faithful Inn was by far our favorite place to stay. The dining room has very good food and the location cannot be beat. I could also gaureentee you will get a cancellation.

Thanks for the suggestion about cancellations. I was making my bookings by internet but I will phone the Old Faithful Inn and see if I can be placed on a wait list for rooms with bath.
I have stayed at the Wawona in Yosemite in a room w/o bath and it wasn't all that inconvenient.

Lake Yellowstone Hotel is great for nice meals, but the rooms? fageddaboutit!

We stayed in the Lake Yellowstone Hotel cabins. They had been refurbished and we were happy with our room. We spent some time in the hotel itself, but didn't see any of the rooms. We also stayed in the Old Faithful Inn and had a room w/ bath. It was a nice room, but we peeked into one of the old rooms without a bath and would have been fine with one of those (bath down the hall). We loved the common areas of the Old Faithful Inn and the location amongst all of those geysers. The Lake area was beautiful and we liked being able to park right next to our cabin.

Stayed in a "Western" cabin at Lake yellowstone hotel several years ago. Okay, its not the Four Seasons, but this is a national park and it was a clean, comfortable "Standard" motel-type room, with shower, toilet and sink, and the location is a lot quieter and less busy than Old Faithful. We found that we could go anywhere in the park from there, and used that as our one and only base for 4 days -- no packing and unpacking and making check-in and check-out times. To me, the drive to anywhere in the park is all part of the experience, for you never know when a bear, moose, elk or whathavyou will cross your path.

I like the "Western Cabins" anywhere in the park. The Old Faithful Snow Lodge is also good. The lodges at Canyon are also ok, or better.

Some of the Frontier Cabins are ok, but not great.

I would avoid any thing called "Pioneer", "Roughrider", or "Budget". If those were erected in your neighborhood, you would sue the planning commission. They are hovels in my opinion. I had rather stay in a tent.

As a general comment, I dislike Grant Village and all of the accommodations at Mammoth.
