Yellowstone via Salt Lake or South dakota

Our 1st time evr with 2 kids - 9&5 mid July. We would like to fly into south dakota or SLC and drive to yellowtsone. Have total of 6 days excluding travel days. Both routes seem to offer a lot. Is there a suggestiin on one versus another given time of year and number of days? Thanks much. I am super excited but also feel clueless!

From Salt Lake to Yellowstone we went through one of the most beautiful areas we had ever seen by going through Logan Canyon and Great Bear Lake. I don't think you can beat it--and it would seem to me to be shorter but I haven't checked.
PLUS you drive straight up through the Grand Tetons--truly a sight!
AND seeing the Mormon Tabernacle and Temple Square in SLC and the Great Salt Lake is worthy.

For a short trip, I'd fly into SLC which is closer. Spend some time in Grand Teton as well. The route that Gretchen mentions is very scenic.

With that short a period of time flying into SD would be a waste as you wouldn't have enough time to do justice to the Black Hills, Badlands etc. There are more (and usually cheaper) flights to SLC from most places.

That said, with only six days I'd probably fly into Bozeman instead of either Rapid City or Salt Lake. There's so much to do and see in the Yellowstone/Grand Teton region that the hours of driving to and from SLC could be put to better use in my view.

Flying into Bozeman or Jackson would definitely be better. I had assumed that SLC was chosen because of cost.

Most people go to the magnificent lodge and look at Faithful geyser
Take a photograph and leave.

Do you know Yellowstone is in a caldera?

This video will add excitement to your tour

Below is a description of the area.
