Yellowstone National Park
My friend and I are planning a trip to Yellowstone in early September. What amount of time is long enough to see the park? Are there any battlefields near the park? Is it better to fly into Cody or Jackson Hole?

Im no expert but i will reply
We come in from Denver 2 years ago,an all day drive but very well enjoyed. We also loved Cody but I dont think they had a very big Airport. Jackson I think is bigger but not a lot of choice still. you may want to consider saltlake City as It has major airlines and I think it is about 5 hours(some one correct me if im wrong) We planed on 5 dayes after reading up but left after 4 days and spent the extra day in Colorado YOU WILL ENJOY!! |
For everything you could possibly want to know about Yellowstone NP (including what to see), go to
www.yellowstone-natl-park.com www.nps.gov/yell If you go to data2.itc.nps.gov/parksearch/topicsearch.cfm and then do a search for "Battlefield" park in Wyoming, Idaho, or Montana, you'll find two such places in the NPS system. |
if you want to see all the areas and do some geyer gazing, you should take a week in the park.
some folks think 4 days is enough, a day in each quadrant. to really enjoy the park you need to get off the road and take a look around. hiking in the canyon area, norris geyser basin, eating lunch along the firehole river, those indian paint pots!!! mammouth hot springs what a wonder, i could go on. i only got 5 days there and it wasn't enough to see all the areas. now, if you are a drive thru kind of person, then 3 or 4 days should do it. |
I agree with justme22,
To really see and enjoy Yellowstone you need 5 to 7 days. You can get a good idea of what's in the park in 3 days if that is all the time you have. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument (Custer Battlefield) is about 220 miles from the Tower Jct. of Yellowstone National Park. The bonus is you will travel over the Beartooth Highway. This will be a slow drive and would take about 5 1/2 hours to drive - one way. Utahtea |
I found last fall that the only affordable fares were to Bozeman - many of the flights to Cody & JAC did not operate from Labor Day until ski season.

I second Bozeman. It's a nice but small airport--easy to get in and out.
It's only about an hour drive to Yellowstone through the beautiful Gallatin Canyon to West Yellowstone, then into the park. |
