Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Steamboat Spr., CO

We're going to a wedding in CO (Steamboat Springs). We have 3 days afterward and we're thinking of driving to Mt. Rushmore from Steamboat and then Yellowstone, and then back down to Denver to fly home to the East Coast. Do we have time to do all this in 3 days?

I guess my question is, how many hours is it from Steamboat to Mt. Rushmore, From Mt. Rush to Yellowstone, and From Yellowstone to Denver?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Never been to the area before.

Simple answer: Do you have time to do all this in 3 days? NO!!!!

Have you checked the mileage, looked at a map at all yet?

www.mapquest.com (approximate only)

Steamboat Springs to Mount Rushmore
10 hours driving time, 415 miles
Mount Rushmore to Yellowstone
over 10 hours, 553 miles
Yellowstone to Denver
12 1/2 hours, 603 miles

Instead, consider Rocky Mountain National Park, CO (see www.nps.gov/parks to get full details & map). It just north of Denver & lots to do & see there too.

Unsure when the wedding is, but any lodging/camping in mid-summer will already be fully booked in any of the areas you mention.

Quite an opportunity here for some exploration.
Steamboat Springs to Rushmore is about 420, 9 hours - not much Interstate highway on this route. Yellowstone to Denver is about 600, about 11 hours. Rushmore to Yellowstone is about 525, about 10 to 11 hours depending on where you measure it to. By the time you drive around in Yellowstone, the trip will be about 1600-1650 miles. I think you can see Yellowstone in about a day, or a day and a half. Just limit yourself to one or two geysers, and don't spend a lot of time at the waterfalls, but they are pretty, particularly if you like that shade of yellow and red in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Depending on when you go, you might have a little problem finding a place to stay overnight in the park itself; July was just about sold out when I was reserving for myself two weeks ago. August had a little availability left, but limited, and not all days were open.

I would pick one of the two areas or just stay close at Rocky Mountain National Park.

Actually, personally, I also would do what the others suggest -- go see RMNP, particularly Trail Ridge Road. But you know now the logistics of what you proposed, and it is your trip. At age 23 I did crazy (&( stuff like that, but not now.
