Yellowstone June 2007 Trip Report

We recently returned from Yellowstone after a week long trip in mid June. We had a wonerful time and saw more wildlife than we expected. The report and pictures are on our website if you're interested.

www.AlandSueJohnson.com

There's an obvious link at the top.

There's some planning information that might be useful. We also tried to tell where we were seeing wildlife. I don't know how true that will still be since its warming up out there.

Really enjoyed your trip report. We are going later in the summer and are looking at spotting scopes now. There is one that has a camera in it on order at a specialty store near us that we are waiting to see first hand. It will be our third trip to Yellowstone, but it has been 9 years and your website was very informative. (and fun to read)

Question. About how long did it take you to get to Canyon from the entrance to Yellowstone? I know you stopped in the Tetons, but just a ball park figure will do.

Great report - thanks for posting it. We were at Yellowstone last year, but we saw no bears and no wolves, alas - we had to go to the Grizzly Center to see those! We drove all around the park with a "here, grizzly, grizzly", but they were obviously hiding behind the trees and laughing at us! Saw lots of bison and coyotes and elk though. (And we saw our one and only ever moose, somewhere in deepest Montana and we were so excited!)
Although disappointed about not being lucky with the bears or wolves, I loved the geothermals features the best; magic - especially Norris Basin. And I'm a bit of a geologist (just got my degree!), so all the geology was fasincating to me. We were there in June and expected it to be very busy, but it thankfully wasn't. Truly amazing place!

I think its about an hour and a half to Canyon from the south entrance. It depends a lot on what you see and where you stop. We went by way of Lake.

I think it depends a lot on when you go. Last July the only griz we saw was swimming at Fishing Bridge. I think as it got hotter they moved higher into the mountains. As you point out, its a neat place regardless. We even enjoy the bison jams.

What kind of crowds did you have in mid-June?

Hello AlJ, thanks for this great report! I love your webpage and the way it's all organized. Very user-friendly

We have reservations in September for 2 weeks in Yellowstone, flying into Jackson. Even though we've been there many times, this will be the longest. So I really appreciate all your advice on wildlife viewing.

dskimo: Crowds weren't bad but the park was full. Upper Geyser Basin got kind of crowded. We started early in the AM and didn't pay any attention.

kopp: Thanks. Glad you liked the site. You wildlife viewing may be a lot different. HOpefully the elk rut will still be going on. You need to pass through Mammoth to check it out.
