Fodor's National Parks of the West was our 'Bible' for our 8 trips out west. It has everything, much of which is now on this site. Thx Fodors! :)

Frommer's Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks -- an overview, hikes, suggested tours, nature guide, dining and lodging and more

Falcon Guide, Scenic Driving: Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks -- information about what you are seeing as you tour

I'd recommend three books:
1. Frommer's "Yellowstone & Grand Tetons National Parks."
2. The Wyoming book in the Discover America series, published by Compass American Guides. (While the book covers the entire state, you get a lot of interesting historical information. In general, this is a magnificent series of state books that I heartily endorse.)
3. If you're a photographer, then I strongly recommend "Photographer's Guide to Yellowstone & the Tetons," published by Stackpole Books.

I liked the Wyoming Handbook from Moon publications.

I borrowed the others mentioned here from the library, BUT bought "Yellowstone Treasures" by Janet Chapple. We are going in June and I can not imagine a more beautiful or informative book than this one, I bought it on amazon.com , FYI Judy

Would suggest Yellowstone Grand Teton Road Guide by Free Wheeling Guides. Points out things to look for along the park roads as well as history of the park. If you want books strictly on hiking trails: Teton Trails by Katy Duffy and Darwin Wile or Yellowstone Trails by Mark C. Marschall. Could also contact the natural history association at either park for a list of materials they sell.

Hey guys, Fodors guide ROCK for whatever geographical region you're researching. They are thorough, comprehensive and always cutting edge.

And hellooooo, lets not forget where we are posting, people!

Whoops! It wasn't a Moon handbook I liked so much for Wyoming. It was the Discover America Guide previously mentioned by HowardR.
