Yellowstone

Am starting to plan a trip to Yellowstone next year in September. We would like to do a day horse trek through Yellowstone. Love to visit Cody as we are into western gear. We are staying in our time share at west Yellowstone for four days. Will drive across with our American friends from Fresno California. Haven't really nailed how long around Yellowstone but we're thinking possibly a week. Do u think that's long enough or too long. Any suggestions on the horse trek company that's recommended and the drive across from Ca. Thanks from the Aussie's

From Fresno to West Yellowstone, MT is a bit over 1000 miles (16 hours). This route goes through a very desolate part of Nevada. Can your friends meet you in Salt Lake City?
Last summer I saw far more elk and bison than I did horses in Yellowstone.
If you're going to Fresno anyway why not plan on going to Yosemite instead?

Because - they have a timeshare in West Yellowstone . . .

Pynewood: Are you flying into California and then traveling to Fresno to meet up w/ your friends? If so your fastest route would be north to Sacramento then to Reno, then across Nevada to Elko, into Idaho through Pocatello and Idaho Falls and on to West Yellowstone.

That is about 14 -15 hours straight driving - so really two days. If you want to stop for a night or two at North lake Tahoe which is only about 4 hours from Fresno - or a bit more if you run into traffic around Sacramento/Roseville. From Northshore you'll have about 11 hours to W. Yellowstone.

OR . . . IF . . you want a real thrill - you can head east from Fresno into Yosemite and across hwy 120 to 395 and up to Reno.

Just depends on how many days you want to get to Montana.

Thanks guys. Have done Yosemite some years ago. The drive across to Lake Tahoe sounds great. We are not time restricted so can take a couple of days to get to Yellowstone. Do you reckon September is a good month to trek through Yellowstone. .?

Early in the month yes . . . Late Sept/October it is getting on towards Fall and there can be early snows.
