Yellowston in September
This is one vacation i am not fired up for. My husband saw this special on yellowstone park and the Tetons. The next thing I know my trip to Italy has been postponed until spring. My first question is concerning the temperatures. Does anyone have a clue? The next question is it all its cracked up to be? If anyone has any nifty things to tell me about please do so. I know I sound whinney, well, I guess I am. Thanks in advance.
September is a great month to visit the Tetons and Yellowstone. The crowds have gone and the weather usually is delightfully cool.
And, yes, the sights and sites are magnificent.
Don't complain. You are getting the best of both worlds--Wyoming in the fall and Italy next spring! That guarantees you a great year. So, stop your whining!

Well Yellowstone vs. Italy is not really a multiple choice question is it..However, that said and things beng what they are. Yellowstone will be great in September, as long as it is not Labor Day weekend. After Labor day the crowds ebb and the Park takes on a whole different personality. Anytime mid September to late October is the best time to see Yelowstone.. Good Luck have a nice time !!

I love Yellowstone and find that late May or mid September are great times to visit the park because it is not nearly as crowded. To me it is a miraculous place, particularly when the visitor understands something of the confluence of geographical features required to produce geysers, hot springs, bubbling mud pots, beautiful waterfalls and a canyon that is painted red and gold.

The Grand Tetons are one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the North American West; they are fully worth the time to explore them.

One night, under the light of a full moon, my best girl friend and I walked down to wait for Riverside Geyser to erupt. Then we walked up to Grand Geyser and waited for it. Our wait was rewarded as Grand put on a thrilling show for us. Totally enchanted we walked back to our cabin about 2 AM, full of wonderment and an appreciation of the beauty of nature.

And in case you are wondering, that was our umpteenth trip to Yellowstone, and my best girl friend and I are still having a 47 year romance. A lot of it is because she is a traveling companion for all seasons. She has gone with me from the tops of fourteen thousand foot peaks in the Colorado Rockies to the Swiss Alps, where she had no reservations about wheeling the car over the Susten Pass because she wanted to be there, too. On the cultural side, she has gone with me, or me with her, to Die Volksoper in Vienna and the Opera de la Bastille in Paris.

However, I get the distinct impression from your negative, combative stance that your mind is made up and that nothing in the park will affect you in a positive way because you have already excluded it. My suggestion is this:
If you don't enjoy it, don't spoil it for your husband. Whining about Italy makes a most negative impact.

My family and I went to Yellowstone 2 years ago and europe last year. While both vacations were great, I am surprised to think that I may have enjoyed yellowstone even more. It is incredible. I never thought it could be as lovely as Yosemite, but it is perhaps even more stirring. Please give in to the beauty of it and count your blessings that you will have 2 gorgeous trips in 1 year! Don't forget to visit the north end of the park, to my mind the most beautiful. I'm jealous of you because you have yet to see such a wonderful place.

Yelowstone in September will be great! Besides seeing outstanding scenery and all the wonders of the combination of geology and thermal activity you will see the greatest concentration of large mammalian wildlife on the continent. As other posters have mentioned the crowds will be gone. What an opportunity to see the creations of the Almighty and then to be off to Italy in the spring. Wow! Have a great time.

Went to Yellowstone 1st week in September years ago. No crowds! We took a bus tour and there were 8 other people total on the bus. Weather was beautiful (70's), it's elk mating season and tons of wildlife. Best vacation we ever took - but we're outdoorsy people.

I have to agree with Annie Smith, don't miss the northern part. I thought we wouldn't have time in the beginning of our trip so we were going to skip it. As it turned out, there was plenty of time due to the lack of traffic in September. I loved the northern part; it was exactly how I picture Montana (big sky), although I'm not sure if we were in Montana. If not, we were close.

Yellowstone and the Grand Teton National Parks are on the top of my list for breath taking beauty. Flying into Jackson airport is definitely the most picturesque landing I've ever experienced.

I don't know how you wouldn’t revel in the vast beauty of this area.
Sharon,

My wife and I went to Yellowstone last September (2000) and had a much better time than I expected. I recall that we drove the loop around Yellowstone's park early in the morning (around 8:00 a.m. Mountain time) and we saw several deer and buffalo before we saw our first other human! It felt like we had the park to ourselves.

To answer your actual question, however, it was quite cool. It heated up to the upper 50's during the day and fell to the mid 30's at night. Just be prepared and you'll have a great time.

Good luck!

That area is beautiful in the Fall, and the weather is ideal. If you enjoy hiking, and seeing the landscape, you will enjoy this.
