yeah or nay grand canyon in dec/jan
 

Need advice on whether or not to go to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas during xmas/new years holiday. Our family has never been and the holiday time is the easiest time for us all to get away. We will be in California (Orange County area) for Christmas. I am thinking of flying into Ca and out of Vegas. I realize the weather may not be the best, cold won't bother us, just winter driving conditions.

We will probably include hoover Dam, but what about the red rock canyon? Any suggestions would be great-----especially out of the ordinary experiences. (possibly what the locals find unique about this area of the county)

Lodging might be a problem. The holiday season can sometimes get crowded at The Canyon but, if you can get a place to stay, then the Grand Canyon is one of the places on this planet that SHOULD NOT BE MISSED.

Heavy snow is not common, but possible, in the desert area of Northern Arizona. When it does snow, it usually melts fairly quickly in the dryer conditions there. Checking the weather forecast about a week before your planned arrival should give a good idea about the odds of a nasty storm.

IF you enjoy adventure, reserve a mule ride to the bottom, stay overnight, and return the next day.
It is one of our most memorable events of the SR. (We went in spring)

Take a GoPro but do not use the > wide view < as it does not correct for motion. Use one of the other options.

Just remember to bring Yak Trax if you want to hike into the canyon--the top can be really icy and slippery on the trails. Once you get into the canyon it is warm.

I would go in heartbeat even if I just did rim walks. Red rocks with snow on them are so beautiful.

I live in the Sedona (red rocks) area and it's spectacular with its occasional snow, but the roads are not. Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon is a solid 5-6 hours and they do get snow in the winter. However, it's one of my favorite places and hiking to the bottom and back is an amazing experience. I wouldn't do it without an overnight stay at Phantom Ranch, however.

Forty-five years ago my brother and I descended into the canyon after a January snowfall. I can still clearly remember it being one of the most beautiful sight I have ever seen.
