I wouldn't try to bring any instrument into the stadium, let alone actually play it!
Enjoy the game and your trip! Others have suggested it but make sure you take the time to walk around the Stadium and enjoy it. It really is a nice stadium (as it should be for it being the most expensive baseball). There is a bar on the 1B (so not far from your seats) that looks away from the stadium where you can get a decent view of Manhattan on a clear day. There is also a small museum of Yankees history (that may or may not interest you but would be a good introduction to baseball / Yankees) as well as the Monument Park in CF.

Not sure if you know the details but the Yankees are by far the winningest team in baseball - with almost 1/4 of all world series and another large number of American League titles. They also have had large number of historically famous players starting with the Babe in the 1920s on.
You can see their retired numbers and the monuments in Monument Park - but it closes 30 minutes prior to the start of the game. And getting into the stadium cans easily take 30 minutes - so definitely go early.
And I would not take any sort of musical instrument - might be confiscated at the gate.

Confiscated at the gate? Are you serious? It is a plastic horn, for goodness sakes. And here I thought they were looking for weapons and alcohol when they peeked into my bag! Good thing I wasn't wearing a giant fuzzy panda head!
At any rate, I wish Alex and family lots of fun at the game, with or without the noisemakers.
By the way, I hope to return for my third visit to South AFrica in the not-too-distant future. Maybe will even get to attend a Springboks game.

Thanks everyone! We can't wait! Will be sure to do some research on the Yankees as well. My son (9) is already hoping to catch a baseball hit up into the stand, I haven't had the heart yet to tell him that we're seated a bit too high up in the stand for that to be a likely possibility! We may have to settle for a Babe Ruth bobblehead or something?
Ekscrunchy I hope you do return to SA, a Springbok game is always a good experience (b.t.w. I don't know if you knew it, but "Ek's" is Afrikaans for "I am" - "I am crunchy"?

Alex, try to be there early and in the outfield stands during Batting Practice, balls will be hit into the seats where maybe your son can catch one. You will not have one hit into your section during the game (very low chances one is hit that high - I've seen one ball go into this level in 5 games up there). There are plenty of souvenir stands to find something for your son but they are expensive.
eks, the reason they would be confiscated would be to avoid confrontations with fans. Until 2 years ago, you couldnt bring a tablet into the game...There are a lot of rules in the fineprint with what you can bring in and musical instruments are listed.
