XRay checked in bag-what happens when...?

I have a compass in the bag I'm checking in. What happens when they find something suspect? Do they open the bag? I'll have locks on mine..do they hold up the plane and notify me..how do they do it please? Thanks.

I don't know this for sure, but I would think a compass could be detected and they can differentiate it from anything <BR>"suspect," as you say.

I'd put it in my carry-on bag. That way, you can explain what it is if anyone gets suspicious, and it won't get damaged, either. Also, would you really want to give baggage claim staff a reason to rifle your main luggage?

<BR>I would carry it on...may get broken or damaged thrown around...it can be easily looked at too...I carried on an money activated cast iron bank seperately and they easily inspected it and was on my way..

While we're on this subject, a friend was flying to a wedding, carrying his gift wrapped wedding gift, a large Waterford crystal vase (fully leaded). Because of the lead content, they couldn't "see" what it was and he was made to unwrap his professionally gift wrapped present so they could get a better look! He was not a happy camper.
