Xmas Sale Shopping

am looking to come over to ny from london and see what the sales are like over the xmas and new yrs period, would it be worth my while coming to ny for this and how big are the discounts on the clothes, etc? am looking to buy armani, hugo, calvin, etc, etc

You can find a good bargain after xmas, walk along 57th street and visit the boutiques and go up Madison to Bloomingdales. I believe prices will be a bit better here than in london, although you do have good sales at Harvey Nichol's and the like over there, too. I doubt you'll save any substantial money, but New York is a nice place to visit over the holidays anyway.

Q you will get a good exchange rate since the Pound is worth more than the dollar. If I were you I'd go to Canada where their dollar is worth even less. You will definitely score there.

Kate, what are you trying to say? The pound has always been worth more than a dollar!

You should find TONS of things on sale here, all the stores traditonally have good sales after Christmas, but I think this year the sales seem to have started a bit early, encouraging people to shop for the holidays.

There are also discount stores, like Daffy's and Century 21 and of course the outlet shopping centers in the area.

If you have some time, you might take a trip to Philadelphia to Franklin Mills, which is a wonderful outlet center with lots of stores, a mile long shopping center.

Have a great trip and enjoy the City.

Make sure to hit both locations of Filene's Basement. They have great deals!

emma Dec 14th, 2002 03:26 PM

there are lots of good discounts at woodbury outlets after christmas. . . a lot of designer stuff, aka kate spade, coach, ck, dk, armani, etc.
it's about 1 hr busride out of the city, but apparently it's a HUGE tourist attraction for people visiting nyc (i wouldn't know, living 15 min from woodbury)
anyway, i'll definitely be there after christmas and if you feel like taking a day trip out of the city you should go to! :)

another kate Dec 14th, 2002 03:30 PM

moneyman, I believe there was a time when the dollar was worth more than the British pound.

Q Dec 14th, 2002 03:40 PM

hi emma, i went to woodbury last july, MUCH bigger than what we have in the UK, i think you could fit one shopping village in the uk into a lil area of woodbury, found some v good deals, but was rather dissapointed in timberland and rockport, they didnt have the boots i buy in the uk *grrrrr*

if i come back then woodbury is a must for me :)

the visit will be on own and i think a one stop shop area is v good instead of walking all over ny streets with lots of bags :D

Hi Q!
I try to go to Saks Fifth Avenue after Christmas. There is where you can get really good clothing for really good prices. There are great savings in the leather coats and jackets, mens suits, sportswear. I always come out with bags and bags of clothes! And it is a pleasant place to shop and have lunch upstairs overlooking Rockefellar Center.
Have a great visit!
*my husband remembers going to London in the 60's when the pound was about 2+ to the dollar:)

Q Dec 14th, 2002 04:01 PM

hi nygirl, i wish the pound was still worth the same, if that was the case id stay MUCHHHHHH longer over in ny ;)

everyone was telling me to goto macy's etc but when i did go, didnt find much that i liked. am trying everything i can NOT to come to ny cause this trip will kill me and ive just got back from 2 other holidays in the last 3months!!!!! HELPPPPPPPP :)

NYGirl Dec 14th, 2002 06:47 PM

Q-sorry I got that backwards!
It was 2-4 USD to a pound. He bought an Austin Healy for $4,000 and brought it home with him:)

katie Dec 14th, 2002 06:52 PM

Aaww Q, you can do it! It will be fun. Everyone will be jolly with the spirit of the season and you will go into a big department store and the sight of grown women ripping garments out of other peoples hands, fighting over the last pair of Calvin Klein trousers, rolling around on the floor fighting over the size 8 coat that only comes in black.. it will be fun!
Saks is nice, they are very busy after Christmas but the atmosphere stays pretty cool. You can always take a break and go peek out the window at the street below and the skating rink at Rock Center. Or go over to St Pats and sit down and be peaceful, then back you go to Saks and those sales!
Mens shoes and the Ralph Lauren shop are good bargains.
Happy Shopping
