Wyoming route choice
 

Which route from Sheridan to Cody? Based on scenery and interesting places, would you choose going through Powell or Greybull?

Thanks for your help.

Just to make sure of the question:

***your driving (a car, truck, RV?) from Sheridan over the Big Horn Mountains West?

***your asking should you split of at the summit and detour NW and end up in Powell?

***or continue along the summit SW and end up in Greybull?

Either way has some nice scenary, The SW route has a beautiful very looooong green meadow plateau with trees and Moose often seen in the summer and cows all over the rooad. One of my favorite picnic areas is Dead Swede.
There is a very steep switchback downhill into Greybull but he canyon view is fabulous and you can stop at Shell Creek overllook. That whole trip has signs posted on the rocks the note what time period they are from.
And near the end is a gravel rooad that leads to one of the very best and biggest Dinosur tracks areas in the US.
Greybull (small one stoplight town with an A& W the most exciting thing and 3 gas stations) to Cody is a forlorn drive..watch for police in Greybull who LOVE to ticket tourists for not watching the speed limit and antelope who jump the fence.

Drive from Summit NW to Powell is nice too more greenery canyons,,Powell a bigger town with areas tiny rural hospital...but there again Powell loves to give tickets. Ride Powell to Cody not that exciting...

Greybull route

Here's what I wrote in a trip report (moving west from east) -

Given our circuitous routing, I tried to find a route that wouldn't be backtracking as we made our way to Billings via Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

I use a GPS and Google Maps, but I love maps. Real maps. The paper kind. And I love finding the routes with the dotted green lines that indicate scenic roads. So, with that as the carrot, we headed off east on Hwy 14 out of Cody. None of us knew what to expect.

We drove through the little towns including Greybull. We wondered about the big parking lot of planes and the signs indicated it was the Museum of Flight and Aerial Firefighting

If you want to wander among aging planes off all types, this may be the place for you.

We continued on and...all of a sudden, we felt we were in Sedona, AZ. Gorgeous red rock formations. Canyons. Switchbacks. Turn-offs and signs for trails and waterfalls.

I will go back. It was an amazing "find" and one that we just drove through - on this trip anyway. Here's some info -

Fossils. Dinosaur tracks. Waterfall. Gorgeous scenery. What a surprise. The map indicated it was the Bighorn National Forest but didn't give any indication of what we would actually see.

The drive continued to be a beautiful one and we finally intersected with our first interstate. We zoomed up north to Little Bighorn, and I was so glad we made the drive - just a little bit (by a few hours) out of our way.

Last year we drove from Red Lodge, MT, to Sheridan via Powell, and it was scenic all the way. I don't remember any interesting places along the way. We stopped for lunch in Lovell. Nothing much was going on there.

Later, after visiting Buffalo and Thermopolis, we drove from Greybull to Cody. I don't have a particular recollection of Highway 14 until the beautiful stretch from Cody to Yellowstone.

Another part of WY we enjoyed was down around Dubois and Lander.

I guess this mostly boils down to whether you take Medicine Wheel Passage (to Lovell) or Bighorn Scenic Byway (to Greybull).

I did the Greybull route, and loved it. First there's a pretty zig-zag ascent up a forested mountain, which I was expecting, but what I was not expecting was all the beautiful rock formations near the end.

Places to stop in this route include Shell Falls, Devil's Kitchen (a secluded but beautiful place that you'll probably have all to yourself -- you'll need to plot a course over a few haul roads to get there), and Lisa's Restaurant in Greybull, which I've heard is good. It was closed when I paid my visit.

Sounds like the Greybull route. We will be in a car and used to driving Colorado mountain roads so either would be OK that way. Thanks for the info.
