Wynn is a loser

I recently spent the weekend in Las Vegas (flying in from Philadelphia) in order to attend a friend’s wedding. I had been to Vegas many times in the past, but this was my first trip in a few years so I decided to splurge a little and stay at the Wynn Las Vegas. That was my first mistake.

I arrived at the hotel on Friday morning, September 16th, 2005 and checked in to my $500.00 per night room for a three-day stay. Considering the fact that you can book the Mandarin Hotel overlooking Columbus Circle in the heart of Manhattan for the same price, my expectations were high. That was my second mistake. The room was bland and poorly laid out (I had to stand sideways at the foot of the bed in order to see the television), and the air conditioner only had two setting – bad and worse. At full blast it kept the room just warm enough to make it uncomfortable for sleeping. Indeed, other than being just slightly larger, the room had no amenities that made it any different from hotel rooms throughout Las Vegas that you can get for one-third the price.

As for the staff, they were disinterested at best. While they were very quick to stick out their hands for tips, they performed their various duties with as minimal an effort as possible and one eye on the clock to make sure they did not stay one second past quitting time. This brings me to my third and final mistake. I called the bell desk and asked if I could have a pair of pants pressed. I was curtly told that there would be a rush charge. I found this oddly interesting since I had not told them when I needed the pants back. But at this point I was still in a good mood, so I agreed, and they told me they would send someone up. He eventually came and I filled out a form stating that I was having one pair of pants pressed. He took the form and my pants and then stuck out his hand palm up. I gladly tipped him five dollars and he went on his way. I never saw the pants again.

For three days I called bell captains, approached concierges and managers and left messages for security begging for an answer concerning my missing trousers. And for three days I was ignored, placated with promises of “I’ll look into that” (and then ignored some more) and, finally, accused of never giving them my pants to begin with. When I pointed out that the bell desk admitted that they had the form I had filled out when I handed over my pants, and questioned why the bell boy would take the form and process it if I had not given him the item in question, their reply was – and I am not making this up – “We don’t know why he may have done that. We can’t find him.” And so, for $500 per night, I had the pleasure of spending hours of my three-day trip to Las Vegas searching in vain for my $125 slacks, while the staff that lost them either avoided or insulted me. I ended up going home sans pants, but with a security receipt promising that they would “look into it.” I doubt strongly that I will ever hear from them.

Oh, and just as a side note, the Wynn hotel does something that no other casino in Vegas that I know of does. They make their guests stand in the same, extremely long lines for breakfast as customers who walk in off the street. So in the end, there is not one perk – not one! – for paying the exorbitant price for a room at this self impressed clip joint. I have traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and the United States, and I can say without question that the Wynn Las Vegas was the worst hotel experience of my life. I have spent the days since my return relating that fact to anyone who will liste

Haven't you discovered that hotel staff and "service" in the hotels in Vegas are NOT the same as hotels in other parts of the country/world???? I've pretty much given up on the concept of personalized good service in Vegas.

wliwl Sep 22nd, 2005 03:04 PM

If you haven't already, you should leave a review on tripadvisor.com. That is where most people will go for hotel reviews.

Patrick Sep 22nd, 2005 03:05 PM

Wow. I've known a lot of people to lose their shirt in Las Vegas, but you're the first I know of to lose his pants!

What a horrible story. Did you really pay $1500 for three nights at the Wynn -- in a room, not a suite? Didn't it even go down in price for Sunday night?

curiousgeo Sep 22nd, 2005 03:31 PM

Amazing first post too!

Sherry Sep 22nd, 2005 03:40 PM

Wow, that sounds horrible! The most recent reviews on tripadvisor et al were showing it had improved since its opening. I am heading to Florida next week and we are going to Vegas for a quick three day jaunt and I have reservations at the Wynn. Thought we would give it a try since the rooms did sound nicer. Now you have me second guessing again. I debated with myself whether to stick with my old standby the Mirage or try the Wynn (I find the Bellagio too "crowded")....
The rates for the Wynn week after next are excellent, so it seemed worthwhile. How did you find the other factors at the hotel, I know hard to imagine anything positive after the fiasco with your pants and your treatment about it, but was the casino decent enough? The restaurants?....or does it not matter at all really, because they treat you so poorly, the chances are this attitude is pervasive throughtout the operation? I like to gamble during the night and into the early morning, if the dealers dont have a good attitude that would pretty much ruin it for me :)Thanks. Sorry again about your awful time there...

Heck, I lost my pants overnight in a campground tent in Munich. The campground cost only five bucks American and the next morning I got lots of attention from the ladies (and some guys). Forget Vegas. The cheaper the thrill the better.

fehgeddaboudit Sep 22nd, 2005 06:25 PM

Good for a laugh, rsav.

Little_Man Sep 22nd, 2005 06:43 PM

good one, jorr!
well, looks like I'll stick w/ the Venetian next time!

I ended up going home sans pants

Must have made getting through airport security a breeze...

Sorry you had a bad stay but it was a well told story anyway.

sgorces Sep 22nd, 2005 08:57 PM

Man! Sounds like you ran into one of those infamous Vegas pickpockets, 'cept he was behind the front desk. At least their slots spit out cash like an ATM, right?...wrong!

Neil_Oz Sep 22nd, 2005 10:07 PM

"...you're the first I know of to lose his pants!"

Well, late one night in Memphis Tenn. a former Australian prime minister, Malcolm Fraser, managed to lose his pants in circumstances that have never been satisfactorily explained. One thing seems sure, though - it wasn't the hotel that misplaced them, as he definitely had them on when he went out.

fredman Sep 22nd, 2005 11:20 PM

So what if it's his first post - EVERYONE has a first post, don't they ?

Does EVERYONE'S first post have to be positive ? Gheesh.

jlm_mi Sep 23rd, 2005 03:17 AM

Most people's first post is much more benign, and typically they are asking for help. This is definitely unusual, though that doesn't mean anything in and of itself.

Still - frankie - I am quite certain that I could find you a similarly scathing review of the Venetian. Would that change your mind about staying there? When you read one negative review amidst many positive ones, you have to realize that 1) there are bad days everywhere and 2) no hotel is going to be good for everyone and 3) some people just don't have good experiences anywhere. So, judging a place only on one review seems silly, but it's your vacation that you're affecting, so no skin off my nose. I won't rule out staying at Wynn from one review, though. If I see many more, then maybe . . .

artman Sep 23rd, 2005 04:06 AM

I think if you really read this complaint it becomes rather obvious that this poster has some ax to grind. There are just to many extreme statements and conclusions jumbed upon to really take this persons story for more than what it appears to be...a story.

iceeu2 Sep 23rd, 2005 04:19 AM

Any reason you couldn't press your own pants? When I am in Vegas, I don't care how wrinkled someone's pants are! Just roll the dice!!!

socialworker Sep 23rd, 2005 06:31 AM

When I first started posting on this board, I believed pretty much everything that everyone wrote, b/c I could not imagine someone taking the trouble to make up a story, whatever their reason.....However, after a year and a half and further experiece, I know that people have many reasons for posting...and that the first post a truly "naive"--ie new-- contributor writes, does not tend to sound like this very experienced traveler.

It may not mean anything, (the dates are not the dates he was there) but when I look up the week-end rates online for the Wynn, they are nowhere near the price referenced here. I am not accusing, but something about this whole post, just does not ring true. On the Europe board, there was an instance of a hotel operator writing critically about one of his competitors. I am not saying that here but there does seem to be an agenda....IMO, no one who has the previous travel experience that rsav claims to have would tolerate that level of abuse at those prices!!

sylvia3 Sep 23rd, 2005 06:55 AM

That pants story seems a little elaborate to be made up--I'm curious now about other Wynn reviews. (Trip Advisor is not a very good source, in my opinion--anyone can post anything, including the hotel itself.)

Little_Man Sep 23rd, 2005 07:10 AM

well, whatever the truth, it was still fun to read!
When Wynn first opened I was really hoping to stay there, but word of mouth just hasn't been great on this property, unfortunately. Friends have told me they weren't impressed, and tripadvisor has been pretty mixed. I was hoping their rooms would be nicer than the Venetians, but that just doesn't seem to be the case. But you're right, jlm I have read scathing reviews of the Venetian, so it's definitely good to read this pantsless review with a grain of salt!!!

TheWeasel Sep 23rd, 2005 07:17 AM

I'm with socialworker - how could a supposedly experienced traveller put up with such crappy service and do nothing (until the pants are lost)? The story is so full of crap.

First off, the A/C doesn't work in a $500 room, and he didn't ask for a new room? Didn't even complain and ask for someone to come fix it?

As for the pants: he spent 3 nights in the hotel. After sending the pants away, and not getting them back, he spent 3 days calling everyone trying to track them down? Did he start trying to track them down the very instant they left his hands? And what kind of experienced traveller calls hotel security looking for his pants?

fehgeddaboudit Sep 23rd, 2005 01:15 PM

now, we're thinking, Weasel.

Sounds like rsav is really, really mad and has joined more than one travel forum just to vent. I can relate.

vegasnative Sep 23rd, 2005 02:40 PM

First I have to say that his experience was unfortunate (at best) if not down right crappy! I would also be upset if I paid $1500. dollars for 3 nights in a hotel and felt as though I was not appreciated as a guest. I just want to mention one thing that struck me as odd though. Yes, Vegas is known as a tipping town, the skycaps get tipped, the doormen get tipped, the bellman get tipped, the waiters...but when I go to NYC I tip all these same people, so I am a little sick of people suggesting it only happens in Vegas. The other thing I would like to mention is when Steve Wynn opened the Bellagio the talk amongst the front service people (bells, valet & door...I know this because I was one) was that he was a stickler on tips. If one even suggested or hinted that they wanted a tip they would be fired, so when the bellman stuck his hand out palm up, I find this type of behavior from an individual that got his job over about 1000 others (and that is not an exageration) is a little mind boggling. Anyway, it is a new hotel and many quirks obviously still need to be worked out, but I agree with other posters, can't let one bad review ruin it for others...if there were tons of them then I would consider staying elsewhere...personally I would have stayed elsewhere anyway at $500. a night!!!!!!

PalmSpringsDeb Sep 23rd, 2005 03:25 PM

I thoroughly enjoyed his story - I can see how that could happen - anything can happen in Vegas. But, just as a note on the positive side, the best hotels I have stayed in Vegas are the Bellagio; very opulent and good service, and the Rio; not so opulent, but excellent service and top rate food. My husband and I did the room service thing almost all weekend. Best food out of all hotels on the west coast I've been to (so far)...

LHG Sep 23rd, 2005 04:37 PM

I stayed at the Wynn in June, and I have to say, I loved it. The staff was friendly, the room was beautiful-as well as the pool. I booked a resort room, and was upgraded to a tower suite. I can't wait to go back!

fehgeddaboudit Sep 23rd, 2005 05:53 PM

By the way, folks, it was $500.00 a night for a three day stay. Not $1500 as "vegasnative" typed above, it was one thousand dollars. Three days/Two nights. We've all read the fine print when booking a trip.

I'm realllllllly curious to know how "rsav" monitored quitting time and the time clock related to this claim of employees not staying one second past. How many people could "rsav" possibly have witnessed bolting from their job posts?

THIS is interesting:

"... I have spent the days since my return relating that fact to anyone who will liste "

Did the pants arrive at the door, and "rsav" couldn't finish his/her sentence? Did the anguish and trauma case "rsav" to collapse onto the floor, only to click the mouse one last time and post this message?

THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW

Patrick Sep 23rd, 2005 06:05 PM

Ah. Three DAYS. I missed that part. Why do people ever quote the number of days rather than the number of nights since we pay by the night and stay by the night? I mean if you follow the allowed checkin and checkout times, there's no way you even can get three days without paying for three nights! Paying for two nights actually gets you one full day, a piece of an afternoon, and most or possibly all of a morning. That is NOT three days in my book. In fact it isn't even two full days.

I also wondered how rsav was aware of that "clockwatching" deal by the staff and what made him aware that they didn't stay one minute past work time.

But in all fairness he never said he had a room with an air conditioner that didn't work. He described a system that was inefficient. There are tons of hotels, including very fine ones, where that is true. If they have a poor system, what good does it do to change rooms?

flowertree Oct 14th, 2005 03:32 AM

In fairness to the poster,my brother and his friends rented a suite in the Bellagio and were so looking frorward to it.They were so disappointed by the standard fo the room, and the useless staff who wouldn't fix problems in the room they checked out early.Just because you pay a lot doesn't necessarily mean better service.

Keith Oct 14th, 2005 04:24 AM

There is no reason to give any more credence to rsav than the posts on Trip Advisor. rsav has never posted to Fodor’s again.

This is one of the great things about Fodor's, I can click on the poster's name and see what they say about other places and gauge how much to credit their comments and if their tastes are similar to mine.

I swear that in many areas of Trip Advisor, half of the posts are by small business operators and their competitors.

Unfortunately there seem to be many who have not yet learned this basic fact of travel life and yet others who simply refuse to believe it..until it happens to them.

That may all be true, but by the same token there are also people who actually believe that you aren't MORE LIKELY to get better service at a higher priced place.

Clifton Oct 14th, 2005 08:41 PM

You can put me in that group :)

tracys2cents Oct 15th, 2005 01:48 PM

sounds like you're the victim of a big-time pants theft ring. Or maybe just a disgruntled bellboy. Maybe he was told he'll be laid off at the end of the week, and decided to make off with 100 pairs of pants, leaving the hotel to foot the bill.

I surely don't think this story was made up! That would take quite an imagination.

And you DON'T always get what you pay for! Sometimes you are just dumb enough to get royally ripped off! $500 for a hotel room? Please!
