We are trying to rent a car in Denver for the lowest possible rate.

I rent in Denver often and do Priceline or Hotwire. Usually save about 50% over what is quoted through Travelocity.

Did you compare rates at this site vs. just looking up rates on Orbitz?

Yes, I too would look at Priceline and Hotwire. They don't always give you a better deal. Last week in Hawaii, Thrifty's advertised rate was only $11 higher that my highest failed bid on Priceline, and Hotwire's rate was the same as the Thrifty's.

My strategy for booking car rental is to look on Orbitz/Travelocity for the style car and get the price. Then I go to Hotwire and get the price which will include the taxes and airport charges. Then I can bid on PL, knowing what will be the addons. It's true that sometimes you don't save much--but I usually save a bundle at DIA. Once Hotwire was so cheap I didn't even go to PL!!

DO NOT use Payless!!! I flew into Denver last spring when my Dad was in the hospital and Payless had the cheapest rate. When I got to their places, it looked like a refugee camp! They had rented so many cars out at cheep rates that they had to wait for returns before giving out cars. According to the complaints I heard while standing in line, people stood in line for an hour to talk to a representative and then had to wait, heaven knows how long for "their" car to be returned by the previous renter.

I walked over to Enterprise and paid an arm and a leg, but I was able to get to the hospital to see my Dad.

GBbabe, I think the lesson here is: always have a backup car reservation (probably at the next-cheapest price) in case primary doesn't work out for some reason...

Andrew, that is news you can use!! Thanks. Except for the PL types, car rentals are not charged until used, in my experience.

Gretchen and others who know how to do Priceline,

Please forgive my ignorance, but I have a question. When you say you "bid knowing what will be the addons" does that mean you bid the pre-addon price or the total price with addons?

I've never tried Priceline before but I'm tempted to give it a go for our trip to Yellowstone on the 2nd. I have a reservation now, but it's high and I sure would like to save a bit if I could.

My strategy. I look at a place like Travelocity and find the lowest rental price for "my size" car.
I look on Hotwire for that size car and the date. They will give me a "price" which I do not have to accept, which includes the tax and any surcharges for that location.
Then I go to priceline and start my bidding process, knowing that the price I bed--for that location --will have added on, the tax and surcharge that I have discovered through Hotwire. So I bid maybe a half or a third lower than Hotwire's base, knowing there are gong to be additions. Do you have the idea? Bid low the first time--half or so.

I went through the first steps last night on Travelocity, Orbitz, and Hotwire. I have a mid-size SUV for 8 days out of Bozeman for about $340.00 (including the taxes and fees). Everything I saw on the other sites was at least a $100.00, or so, higher for the same type vehicle.

Now that I have your response, I'll go through the process again and pay closer attention to everything. I only want an airport pick-up, due to some timing issues, but I think there's some way to stipulate that.
