Wow-what's going on in Hawaii?

I just read on CNN that Hawaii is pretty much shut down because of high winds.

Would still rather be there than the North East...supposed to be a windchill of -25 tomorrow!

wow Jan 15th, 2004 11:50 AM

I don't know! :) :) :)

Rusty Jan 15th, 2004 11:53 AM

Honolulu - wind 5mph
Lahaina, Maui - wind 6mph

Suzie Jan 15th, 2004 12:00 PM

Looks like the wind was really bad yesterday but is not blowing nearly as hard today. Yesterday wind was clocked at 85 on west coast of Oahu and 50 on Kauai. Did some damage to roofs and power poles.

BeachBoi Jan 15th, 2004 12:02 PM

High winds,electricity knowcked out.

At least they are answering the business ((t)) today on Kauai, apparently yesterday people went home from work to ride it out. C:-)

gyppielou Jan 15th, 2004 01:49 PM

I anticipate a wonderful story from Kal!

Marilyn Jan 15th, 2004 03:44 PM

I am picturing Kal and Mrs. Kal, sitting on their lanai, each with a tropical drink in hand, hair blowing straight out from their heads in the "gentle breeze," enjoying the sunset. I'm sure they won't let a little wind spoil one minute of their Hawaiian holiday!

FainaAgain Jan 15th, 2004 03:49 PM

Wow, you must've been waiting all your Fodorite's life for this question :)

Kikahead, welcome back, did you catch the wind on HI?

MelissaHI Jan 15th, 2004 04:12 PM

I live in Honolulu and it's not THAT bad. Yes, high winds. Yes, yesterday we had palm fronds all over the streets as they had blown off the trees. But today is a lovely day....at least, from what I can see. I wore a light sweater in case the wind made me cold, but now I'm wishing I wore a tank top!

wow Jan 15th, 2004 07:15 PM

FainaAgain...You betcha!! And wouldn't you know it?...I didn't know the answer! :) (Always wondered about your 'name'....Are you waiting for a question too?? ha! ha! Seriously...what does your name mean?)

ccolor Jan 16th, 2004 02:06 AM

Do you think it's a real wind or just Kal having fun.........

Marci_77 Jan 16th, 2004 04:04 AM

From the title of your post I thought you were going to ask if they were giving free flights or something! I can't believe the number of posts relating to Hawaii right now.

JohnD Jan 16th, 2004 04:36 AM

Reply to Marci 77, I presume you are not from the northeast US, and call it escapism if you like but people probably find discussing/contemplating Hawaii alot more pleasant than 2F degree temps((W)) (and -20F windchills)((U)).

gyppielou Jan 16th, 2004 05:01 AM

-5F here feels like -27F....ouch!

FainaAgain Jan 16th, 2004 12:56 PM

Wow, it's my real name, I was born in Russia, first I registered as "Faina", lost this when our computers at work changed, couldn't remember my password, or it didn't work, so came back "Again". If they change computers again I'll probably become a "FainaCameBack" or something alike :)

Kal Jan 20th, 2004 12:26 PM

Marilyn, It was a sunrise, not sunset.
;)

We didn't even lose the umbrellas from our Kahlua Koffees although I did crack open a coconut for the first time when it flew out of a tree and hit me on the noggin. 8-}

cc-Yep. I had the Bubba's chili fries with onions but it was a few days after the Big Winds. :-"

Marilyn Jan 20th, 2004 01:12 PM

Welcome back Kal & Mrs. Kal! I just know you had a fab time, and I look forward to a trip report of some sort soon.

All that hot air is comming from that doopy bachelor show. Yuk \:D/

carbogilligan Jan 20th, 2004 05:05 PM

Pardon my ignorance, but who is Kal?
I've seen his name referenced on many different threads. Just curious.......

MelissaHI Jan 20th, 2004 10:02 PM

Kal is like, this Calvin Klein billboard model from the 80s (which I guess explains why he's so popular). He made so much money from modeling his tighty whities that he could retire by 1996 and now travels the world, taking month-long vacations on Kauai. He met his wife (also a fabulous person)--when she was a dancer for Madonna, no less!--slithering down a pole on stage during a concert. All legit, I may add, not in a seedy establishment or anything.

So....carbogilligan, don't worry, you are not ignorant. You probably did not see a lot of culture in NYC from the 80s. Kal rocks!

Marilyn Jan 20th, 2004 10:12 PM

Oh Melissa, you are in soooooo much trouble!

You can write my bio any time you want.
:-D

ccolor Jan 21st, 2004 02:55 AM

Yep, that's the bio Kal gave me, also......you mean it isn't right? ;)

iceeu2 Jan 21st, 2004 04:19 AM

Melissa.....thanks for the laugh! Needed that to get my morning started! And, again, I have to ask....that Kal fellow....you think he is too famous to do a trip report on his month long Kauai vacation???? Because I, along with countless others, need to know if he figured out everyone's fascination with Kauai>>

Kal Jan 21st, 2004 09:33 AM

Actually, Melissa musta been on her 3rd Hurricane at PO'B's in NOLA and heard wrong.
I was a model for "Calvin and Hobbes".

My "6pak" Abs are now "12pak Abs". I have to stay away from brown sweaters because I look like a landslide or gray suits because someone asked "where's the Goodyear logo?"

As for Mrs Kal, she treats this ol' Pole just fine thank you very much! :-X

CarboGilligan...any relation to ProteinSkipper?#-O
Hey...I just got back from 3 weeks in paradise, what do you expect? 8-}
