Wow, what a time to travel! Incredible prices and planes are leaving on time!

Some of the prices I have seen for travel today are just plain amazing. Here are some examples: * East coast and midwest to Hawaii $270.00 RT over Thanksgiving. * $55.00 RT between BWI (Washington DC airport) and Minneapolis on Continental Airlines, * cruises for a week in early December $250.00.

Remember in the early 1990s when everyone was jamming up the phone lines of the airlines when Southwest offered a $200 RT coast to coast, now that is common and many times less. And most people are making more money now. What a time to travel!

Trouble is most people who would normally travel are either broke and in debt or scared to death!

Read the fine print. I have checked out a lot of these low airfares. One I recently saw was 300 rt to Hawaii from stl on MLT. It did not include $127 in taxes and plus additional fees for landing, fuel etc. The actual fare turned out to be $435, not too bad, but over 33% more than the teaser quote.

Here is my experience, seeking others' experience(s) and other comments:

Booked on ORbitz. RT EWR to MCO via Atlanta. Final cost $149. Not a GREAT price, but not bad either. [Earlier in week was $119 via DET on Northwest. Didn't want to go to DET]

Purpose of trip was medical. I had to change return date.

Found out my class was "U" and essentially my ticket was two one-way fares. Could only go stand-by on same day as flight.

Delta would not waive the $100 fee. I had to get a similar fare, thru Atlanta. If I wanted Non stop return (MCO-EWR), I would also have to pay the difference in the ticket price - which was $79 minimum.

Same class ticket was available, but much later in day than I required.

Two days before returning, I checked one-way fares on several web sites. Found/bought a one-way web-only fare for $79 (pre-taxes) and booked it instead. Same class of ticket; Same route thru Atlanta, same airline (Delta), just 8+ hours earlier flight.

Lesson I took away: Next time when I am unsure of my return, I will either buy a higher class of ticket or simply buy one-way tickets. {Several airlines had $79 one way fares Thursday, for my Saturday flight, albeit 1 day before the nut in Atlanta jumped thru security...)

Guy, we'd like to travel, but we're broke. Lost the job last week. Would like to get back on my feet, but see that the fat cat republicans are giving our social safety net to big business. oh well.

I've been looking to books several trips over the next 6 months and have found fares to be much higher than they have been in the past. Wanted to go to Vegas over Thanksgivng, $450 from east coast. I go to Fla every 1st weekend in Feb, this time the fare is currently $181 which would be the most I've paid in 3 years. I know the airlines need to make money but I find generally speaking, airfares are currently higher than they have been in a while. Nothing wrong with that, I just get tired of the propaganda that says air travel is "dirt cheap" right now. Mayeb a few markets, on certain days, on redy eyes, with a million restrictions. "Guy" sounds like an agent to me...

I agree with Mike. I've been looking everywhere for great deals on a tropical family vacation in March and the prices are the same as always - high. For an industry that is crying the blues they sure haven't instituted the first line of defense when supply exceeds demand, which is to lower prices. Unless of course all this talk of low prices is just talk. Guy, if you see any good deals on winter vacations this winter in Mexico or the Caribbean, could you share with us here? I'm looking!

Flew on Sat from Phila to LA. Round trip ticket was $221 on US Air. Return flight is next Monday. The flight times were not were 10 am on Sat and 12:30 on Mon.

When we got to the airport we found that the flight was over booked because the airlines expects lots of cancellations due to recent events. We volunteered to be bumped. They gave us first class tickets on the next flight and two additional round trip tickets to use another time. We volunteered again at the next flight and would have gotten another set of tickets, but someone beat us to it.

The flight we were bumped from left on time, and the second flight we were on left about an hour late, but arrived only about 15 minutes late.
