Would you hike with a donkey?

All right before you start with the puns, I hiked with my ex-husband so yes I've hiked with an ass.
Seriously, I got this pamphlet about hiking with a donkey on the Robert L Stevenson trail in France. I think I'd rather hike with a bear. Aren't donkeys just the meanest little critters?..I think I'll pay for another type of luggage transport, thank you! Has anyone done this?

beentheretwice Aug 26th, 2006 12:22 PM

Not mean, but really smart. Can't imagine someone would have a commerical venture with evil donkeys. Wouldn't make much money at it would they? I think it would be a lot of fun!
(Haven't hike with one, but a relative kept a donkey with their horses and he was a hoot.)

LLindaC Aug 26th, 2006 12:24 PM

hmmm...haven't thought about that, but it would make sense that they'd use only good ones. But this is France, probably different liability, right? Like NONE, lol!

That's funny. :D That was gonna be my answer when I clicked on this post! :D

LLindaC Aug 26th, 2006 12:32 PM

yeah...great minds think alike! ;-)

starrsville Aug 26th, 2006 12:34 PM

Llamas, yes.
Donkeys, no.
Asses, yes, but I'd rather not go into detail.

I understand the snack on the trip is foie gras :-)

LLindaC Aug 26th, 2006 12:52 PM

Okay, for real starssville, maybe you're ready for some Asinotherapy?

http://pros.orange.fr/lambertane/page7a.htm

some things are just too crazy, LOLOL!

starrsville Aug 26th, 2006 12:56 PM

Yep, foie gras during "tea-time at the farm"

starrsville Aug 26th, 2006 12:57 PM

I've done the mule trip down the Grand Canyon. That's enough donkey action (really, mule) for me. Have at it in France!

annesherrod Aug 26th, 2006 01:26 PM

I would hike with a donkey as long as he could keep up with me, a good conversationalist and enjoy a good bottle of pinot at our next rest break!!

The ass hauling our luggge would be on two feet with a very perplexes look!!

enzian Aug 26th, 2006 01:57 PM

My neighbor has a donkey named Ebony Rose, and she is very sweet and full of personality. I am happy to feed and brush her, and ride around in a cart with her. But hike? No thanks, I'll carry my own gear. My one experience, hiking with a donkey we "rescued" on a trail many years ago, did not end well. For starters, she bit my (now ex-)husband in the butt. And she was incredibly stubborn. I've handled horses all my life, but this equine had me truly baffled.

Orlando_Vic Aug 26th, 2006 02:01 PM

Donkeys, yes!

Elephants, no!

LLindaC Aug 26th, 2006 02:11 PM

I've had horses all my life, too. Do you know where that donkey is and how I can get hold of it? I'd love it if it would bite my ex in the butt. We had a rather mean donkey at our barn, but the only time I've been bitten was by a Shetland.

P_M Aug 26th, 2006 02:19 PM

LLindaC, I was going to post the exact same thing about wishing a donkey would bite my ex, but not necessarily on the butt....nuff said.... :-))

OK, now I'm hearing in my head that "King Tut" song, by Steve Martin. There was one part where he sang,

Buried with a donkey
He's my favorite honkey

I suppose that's not politically correct in today's world, but it sure was a hoot back in the day. :-d

mikemo Aug 26th, 2006 03:10 PM

Burrros are preferred here.

I think donkeys are sweet and would feel guilty making the poor little beastie carry my luggage. I would be much happier making some ornery man do the job and maybe get to keep the donkey as a pet.

I have never been bitten by a horse or burro but did have a camel spit in my general direction..:P

enzian Aug 26th, 2006 03:53 PM

LLindaC---last time I saw that donkey, she was standing in the trail, refusing to budge, at about the 12,000 foot level on Mt. Whitney. She had been abandoned by a hiking party, no doubt for her vicious demeanor towards men, and her general stubbornness. The ranger in that area asked us to lead her out to the pack station since we were headed that direction, but she outsmarted us. We left her in a meadow with plenty of grass and water. Had I known how useful she could have been to others in the matter of ex-husbands, I would have tried harder to persuade her to come along (chocolate, maybe?). She was perfectly nice to me.

I probably shouldn't have laughed so hard when she bit him. . . .

LLindaC Aug 26th, 2006 04:25 PM

I'm still ROTFLMAO!

trippinkpj Aug 26th, 2006 04:30 PM

One of my friends got kicked in the ankle by a mule (I think it was a run in the Sierra's). It was a pretty bad break, and it took him several months to recover. One of our buds called it, his "dances with mules", LOL.

nytraveler Aug 26th, 2006 04:34 PM

Isn't it amazing that horses are so much larger and can be handled so easily - and teeny little donkeys are hell on wheels?

There was one at the barn I rode at - I woldn;t go within 30 feet - not only did she bite but she walked on your feet - quite deliberately she would step on your feet with all her weight. (When I asked why they kept her - they said there was no way to get rid of her - no one would take her - even for free.)

obxgirl Aug 26th, 2006 05:33 PM

Smart donkey.

SpeedBuggy Aug 26th, 2006 05:44 PM

Linda, wasn't there a hip hop song a few years back about riding a donkey?

I've got kids, what can I say? :->

lynnejoel1015 Aug 26th, 2006 05:55 PM

I haven't read all the others' responses, but actually, donkeys are gentle, docile creatures. Completely misunderstood and often neglected if not abused. Mean, no.

annesherrod Aug 26th, 2006 07:19 PM

I used to ride Ameican Saddlebreds when I was a teen and compete in shows all over the midwest.

One of my competitors had a horse who needed a companion on the road in the trailer and in the stall, (Saddlebreds are very high strung). It wa a donkey and his name was....."donkey"!!
Very sweet and smart animal.

BayouGal Aug 26th, 2006 08:54 PM

Speedy, I don't think that's the "donkey" that song is referring to. #-O

annesherrod Aug 27th, 2006 06:56 AM

I think Bayou girl is correct!! Yikes... LOL!!! :)
